Clay’s PAC: the mystery continues

WASHINGTON–We recently wrote about a tiff between an ethics watchdog group and Michelle Clay, Rep. Lacy Clay Jr.’s sister and his political director.

At issue was whether the Democratic St. Louis congressman has a leadership PAC. The watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, was surveying lawmakers and asked Michelle Clay. The group didn’t get a straight answer, just an “earful” from Clay’s sister.

When we inquired with Clay’s spokesman, Steven Engelhardt, he said he wasn’t sure whether Rep. Clay had a PAC or not.

Well, he finally provided an answer today, sort of. Yes, Clay has a leadership PAC but it’s inactive, Engelhardt told us. We wanted to check it out, but Engelhardt wasn’t sure of the PAC’s name.

A search of Clay and Lacy on the Federal Election Committee’s website turns up no PACs that appeared to be connected with Clay. (Lawmakers can set up such accounts without clearly disclosing their affiliation with them.)

You folks in the media don’t understand - Clay owns his seat, and answers to nobody. Even if you discovered that he had a PAC named “Tropical Holidays for the Congressman’s Family” it wouldn’t cost him a single vote. So quit harassing his staff and go find some Republicans to bother.
