Workers listen carefully
WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential contenders Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton spoke this week, on different days, to the legislative conference of the AFL-CIO’s Building & Construction Trades Department.
Some 3,000 union delegates attended, from around the country. Among those listening the most intently were those from Indiana, where the presidential content will soon go and where voters still have a choice to make.
Ted Champ, president of Local 4 of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers in Anderson, Indiana, was impressed by both candidates — reflecting their diverse strengths — but seemingly a little more by the one his union has endorsed.
“Obama fired people up. He’s a better speaker,” Champ said. “But Hillary spoke from the heart. She had solutions. She told us what she’d do, and that we should hold her accountable.”
