McCain and veep choice

WASHINGTON — While there’s talk that Barack Obama would need to run with someone having foreign policy experience, given his lack of military or international experience, if he got the Democratic presidential nomination, John McCain has no such problem.

In fact, few nominees since Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy have approached McCain’s military and international background.

That gives McCain the luxury to look wide for a vice presidential running mate, and his best choice just might come from the world of business. A name increasingly talked about is Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard, who was the top female business executive in the country.

She’s now advising McCain on economic issues, and would bring a number of benefits to the ticket. She’s a woman, she’s relatively young, she’s articulate, she’d be viewed as an outsider to Washington, and her background would give the ticket a great deal of economic depth — probably more than the Democratic ticket would have, whoever gets the nomination. Obama, again, would likely have to focus on foreign/military experience — but a McCain-Fiorina ticket would, arguably, trump the Democrats on both international and economic experience.

Of course, whether the GOP positions would be more in line with Americans’ views is another matter.

In the year 2000 I wanted McCain as President. Today I do not because we live in a different world and the canvass of America has changed and so have McCain.

Due to the terrorist situation that we face today, I don’t think that McCain is mentally capable of dealing with these issues and is why he doesn’t speak about being a POW. Very understandable and not his fault but nevertheless, it is a real flaw.

Excuse me, but, what international background does Mr. McCain have?

It’s not funny but, the Post-Dispatch seems already to have decided that Slick Johnny Mc gets a free pass on what it is that he brings to the office of president.

McCain says he needs to bone up on the economy, so I don’t see any real benefit from Ms. Fiorina’s involvement in McCain’s campaign so far.

McCain isn’t sure whether its Sunnis or Shi’ites we’re fighting in Iraq, and only walks down the street with helicopters, humvees and a hundred troops around him while he says security is better in Iraq, where we are fighting the wrong war at the wrong time. Meanwhile, Afghanistan is flooding the world, the US and the streets of the St. Louis Metro area with more toxic white heroin which profits are funding resurgent Taliban abd al Qaeda forces in Afghanistan which now control about 10 percent of that country from where we were attacked on 9/11, and where Osama bin Laden is still at large.

Slick Johnny Mc was against the Bush tax cuts before he was for them.

Slick Johnny Mc condemned George Bush’s pandering to right wing religious zealots in 2000,forcing Bush to apologize and distance himself from Jerry Falwell and the folks at Bob Jones but, now Slick Johnny Mc has eagerly sought out and obtained the endorsment of Pastor John Hagee, who the conservative Catholic League has called an anti-Catholic bigot because Hagee says the Catholic church worked with Hitler in the Holocaust, is the “Whore of Babylon,”the “anti christ,”and a “false cult system.”

Slick Johnny Mc’s support of the Bush policies in Iraq make him a W clone who will only continue the failed policies which have costs some $500 billion and over 4,000 lives with no end in sight for “100 years.”

I think we’ve had enough of morons who don’t know squat about the economy, foreign affairs and the true freedoms cherished by all Americans which made our country a bright shining city on a hill for those yearning to be free.

I voted for John McCain for president in 2000 and won’t ever do so again. I’ll take any Democratic nominee over McCain, he’s lost track of who he was in 2000 in his efforts to be elected and have the GOP retain power.

Excellent post, Tim. The only thing I would add is the campaign finance “mess” (and that’s being charitable) that John McCain finds himself in. Aren’t there any investigative reporters on staff at the PD? The recent story about the FEC was ultra high-level.

It’s worth remembering that military policy experience is not foreign policy experience. Military experience is important when and if your foreign policy has failed. Sen. McCain has plenty of the former but seems often to not quite understand the difference from the latter.

As for the economic depth of Ms. Fiorina, that’s arguable.

Didn’t Ms. Fiorina get canned by HP for spying on its board of directors and other employees? If anything, she certainly fits into the mold of your typical republican.

I think McCain is going to select Leiberman.

I truly hope McCain chooses Lieberman. Remember what happened to the last guy who had Lieberman on his ticket.

Another point to keep in mind about Carly Fiorina from a former HP employee: Like so many other CEO’s in this age Carly looks out for Carly. 10’s of thousands of people lost their jobs because of the direction she chose to take the company. Is that the kind of leadership you want in the white house? She and HP’s current CEO prefer to fire employees working in the United States in favor of making a quick buck hiring over-seas workers. How about we get someone in the white house more concerned about fixing OUR nation’s problems rather than making sure their pocket book gets fatter. I’m an independent but simply cannot vote for McCain if he choses Carly for a running mate. Carly giving financial advice… her financial “expertise” brought HP’s stock price to it’s lowest point in decades and it did not recover until she was fired. Something to think about.
