Must-see TV: McCaskill to Appear on “The Colbert Report”

WASHINGTON–Forget “American Idol.” If you want good reality TV, tune in to Comedy Central next Wednesday night, when Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., will be a guest on the news-parody show, “The Colbert Report.”

Host and late-night comic Stephen Colbert is known for making politicians blush, squirm, or just look plain stupid. So much so that Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., who helped engineer the Democrat’s 2006 takeover of the House, once advised incoming freshman Democrats to avoid the show at all costs.
Apparently McCaskill didn’t get that memo. Sure, the Missouri Democrat has a sharp tongue and quick wit. But Colbert has easily humiliated others who braved his show, luring them into conversations about everything from toupees to pornography. Talk about must-see TV.

“I’m not sure what I’ve gotten myself into,” McCaskill conceded.

Her appearance on the show, McCaskill said, would be a present to her daughter, who is about to turn 19, lives in New York, and loves Colbert.

“With her birthday coming up soon, it seemed like a unique gift to have her come with me to laugh at Stephen Colbert making fun of her mom,” McCaskill said. “At least she won’t forget her 19th birthday.”

I’ve no doubt that McCaskill can hold her own with Colbert, but watch out for those surprise “zingers.”

I do wish, this once, that Claire would sport something a little more “hip” than the attire seen during her network appearances (CNN, MSNBC, NBC, etc.) of late.
