House Republicans Feeling Blue

WASHINGTON–House Republicans just can’t seem to catch a break.

First, they lose three special elections in a row, including one on Tuesday night in a once solidly GOP district in Mississippi. There, Democratic Travis Childers trounced his GOP opponent even after Republicans pumped more than $1 million into the contest and ran ads trying to link Childers to Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama.

Now, the House GOP’s new election slogan—“The Change You Deserve”—has come under withering ridicule. It happens to be the very same slogan used in ads for Effexor, an antidepressant drug. Just imagine the fun Democrats can have with that.

Click here to read Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank’s take on the GOP’s latest maladies, which he labels “Election Anxiety Disorder.”

The House Republicans have brought it on themselves.
1. Their blind support of this President has not helped them, and only in the past few months have they come to realize this.
2. In the South, especially in the areas hit hard by Katrina, this administration’s lack of effective response, and, later rather self-interested awarding of contracts also contributed to to their problems.
3. Lastly, the Republicans have been chanting “stay the course” for far too long. Of course, for many average citizens white and black, this has meant falling income, a housing debacle, a Congress captured by the professional lobbyists, higher gas prices, higher food prices, etc.

Even the most rabidly conservative person in the middle and working class can only look at their dwindling financial resources and come to the realization that “tax-cuts for the wealthiest 1%” are not helping them.

Sadly, what this is most likely going to lead to in November, regardless of the Democratic nominee, is a thinly veiled racist and sexist campaign on the part of Karl Rove and his ilk.

RHanack, your comments are in lock-step with the Democrats, so it’s small wonder your beliefs. I haven’t seen “blind support” of Bush since he has been in office. In fact, it’s because of the lack of backbone of many Republican senators that little was accomplished when they controlled Congress. In fact, it can be said that the reason our deficit shot way up was because Republicans worked with Democrats to increase spending…and Bush failed to veto the bills that came across his desk.

During the Katrina debacle, I would agree that the government did a poor job AFTER it hit…but the democratic governor of Louisiana and democratic mayor of New Orleans did not ask for help soon enough..which they were obligated to do. The government cannot send troups in to a city or state unless requested.

3. The economy was BOOMING until the Democrats took over both houses. I haven’t seen falling income..but am curious as to how the democrats are goind to “fix” this..by raising taxes on the ones that own the companies that employ them? As for lobbyists…Obama and Clinton have been in the pockets of lobbyists for a very long time. Gas prices are high because the value of the dollar is low…but also because the Democrats have: not allowed drilling in Anwar; have not allowed the construction of nuclear reactors; and have not allowed the building of refineries.

During the Bush Administration:

1. After 9/11, there has not been one terrorist attack (non-Iraq related) against US citizens/embassies. Check how many there were prior to that.

2. N. Korea is talking to us now.
3. Libya gave up it’s nuclear intentions.
4. The economy was very strong with housing starts higher than many years prior and unemployment lower than many years prior.
5. Germany and France citizens hate us more. No loss…since they screwed us during the embargo against Iraq.
6. We liberated millions of Iraqis

Need I continue?

As for the racist/sexist comments…you have no facts to back that up. Any negative comments toward Clinton or Obama will be taken as such..just the way you like it…so that you can play the sympathy card. Obama or Clinton will be horrible for this country.

Dear “Logic” -
“During the Bush Administration:

“1. After 9/11, there has not been one terrorist attack (non-Iraq related) against US citizens/embassies. Check how many there were prior to that.”

Of course, the NSA under Rice chose to ignore the memoranda given to her about Al-Qaeda until it was too late. This was learned the hard way from the Kenyan bombings and the USS Cole.

“2. N. Korea is talking to us now.”

North Korea was talking to us when Bush first came in office. It was due to this administration’s brilliant strategy that they stopped. So after 7 years, we are back to where we started.

“3. Libya gave up it’s nuclear intentions.”

Cf. http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/world/libya/nuclear.htm
And don’t forget to thank Mohammed ElBaradei and the IAEA for their help.

“4. The economy was very strong with housing starts higher than many years prior and unemployment lower than many years prior.”

The Bush Administration should have thanked the Clinton Administration for the strong economy and budget surplus. Whatever happened to that?

“5. Germany and France citizens hate us more. No loss…since they screwed us during the embargo against Iraq.”

Huh? I did not even mention them. Oh, I see, you needed another straw man to knock down.

“6. We liberated millions of Iraqis”

Yes and they are so appreciative of that that they plant ieds and and other ambushes for us to show their joy at being liberated. By the way, I have two sons-in-law actively serving, both have done tours in Iraq, so I selfishly would like the fathers of my grandchildren to remain alive.

“As for the racist/sexist comments…you have no facts to back that up. Any negative comments toward Clinton or Obama will be taken as such..just the way you like it…so that you can play the sympathy card. Obama or Clinton will be horrible for this country.”

You would be right except for the fact that already we have had enough chatter about Senator Obama’s middle name, the falsehood of him being a Muslim. No we will not see blatantly racist or sexist ads (well maybe in certain arenas), but I strongly suspect that there will be more than enough of the “Is he the right kind of person (wink, wink)” ads out there. Also, this is the same group of political operatives who spread rumors about John McCain having fathered an illegitimate “black child” during the South Carolina primary back in 2000. I have no reason to expect that they will behave any better.

“your comments are in lock-step with the Democrats”
I don’t know about “lock-step”, according to my wife I don’t have a sense of rhythm.

“I haven’t seen “blind support” of Bush since he has been in office.”

Are we talking about the same administration who got every tax cut bill it put up passed, not to mention other special interest legislation designed to benefit the Friends of Cheney?

“In fact, it’s because of the lack of backbone of many Republican senators that little was accomplished when they controlled Congress.”

I agree with the lack of backbone statement since no Republican Senator or Congressman objected to anything the Bush-Cheney team proposed.

“In fact, it can be said that the reason our deficit shot way up was because Republicans worked with Democrats to increase spending…and Bush failed to veto the bills that came across his desk.”

Don’t forget the cost of the war in Iraq.

“During the Katrina debacle, I would agree that the government did a poor job AFTER it hit…but the democratic governor of Louisiana and democratic mayor of New Orleans did not ask for help soon enough..which they were obligated to do. The government cannot send troups in to a city or state unless requested.”

Of course we still have “Good job Brownie”, and the fact that the mayor could not call out once the phone lines went down, and the fact that anyone watching the news could have probably figured out that help was needed (God forbid a bureaucrat should actually think for themself), and of course the National Guard and its’ equipment was in Iraq. No, Katrina still is a disaster and there is more than enough blame to go around, but President Flyover sat around too long before he did anything.

Just to confirm your suspicions, I will vote for whoever the Democratic nominee is. Actually, I also think that John McCain would have made a better President the last 7 years than Bush, but his time is past.

I trust this explication helps clarify my understandings.

Too many Conservatives are much like this Logic, totally illogic, no use in trying to be rational with anyone who would state:

The economy was BOOMING until the Democrats took over both houses. I haven’t seen falling income..but am curious as to how the democrats are goind to “fix” this..by raising taxes on the ones that own the companies that employ them?

Logic appears to be one who falls into the income bracket of those whose taxes will be raised and who now play legal games with their income and taxes paying less than the average working class American.

But, worst, he twists the facts and appear to believe his own distortions or have bought into the distortions of other Conservative pundits, either is really a sad state.

Ah, where to begin? Thanks for the good responses..nice to debate with liberals who don’t scream and yell.

RHarnack, the Kenyan Embassy was bombed in 1998..during the Clinton Administration. The Tanzanian Embassy was bombed the same year. The USS Cole was struck in 2000. The Khobar Towers…1996.

The rhetoric regarding Bush/Cheney has never been proven…but your hero, Michael Moore has certainly done his best to manipulate all of you into believing this.

Obama’s middle name got some press, for sure. However, I haven’t heard it being an issue for most conservative commentators. Here are my issues with Obama:

1. He doubt his story regarding his upbringing. I went to his rival school, Iolani, in Honolulu but graduated 3 years after he did from Punahou. He mentioned that he smoked marijuana with locals on the beaches of Hawaii and contemplated his heritage. CRAP. First of all, he looked more Hawaiian than black. Whites, or Haoles, were the most discriminated race in Hawaii at the time. As for smoking with locals…”pakalolo” was very popular then but it was unusual for private school students to hang with the locals..but not unheard of…so I can cut him slack there. Cocaine or “blow”(as he referred to it…although it was never referred to like that in Hawaii at the time) didn’t really come into the islands until the early 1980’s..and it was very pricey then. One other note, Central Union Church, which is one of the largest churches in the island and used to have one of the largest congregations in the islands, is a United Church of Christ church…and is two blocks from Punahou…he wasn’t a member. I’m assuming it was politically expedient to become a member when he moved to Illinois?

2. He attended the church lead by a racist, anti-American for 20 years. You can spin this all you want but you won’t convince me that Obama doesn’t believe some of that crap.

3. He’ll talk with terrorists or their sponsors. I’m interested in your take on this.

4. He’ll raise taxes on the rich (which I am not). Tell me how that will jump-start the economy. It doesn’t make sense. The rich own the businesses that employ workers. If you tax them AND their companies (which Obama will do), do you think that will help the workers?

5. He’s pro-baby killing..I’m not.

6. He’s pro-gay marriage. I just don’t believe that is good for the country but I’m sure you believe otherwise.

7. No issues with his race, nor his flag-pin, nor his Pledge of Allegiance hand-over-heart issue…but certainly issues regarding his comments regarding bitterness.

8. Calling the woman reporter “sweetie”. Wow.

9. His wife, although she is not running, was out of line when she said she has not been proud of this country.

I don’t agree about operatives making an issue of his race or of Clinton’s gender. In fact, it appears that the only ones complaining or mentioning that are liberal commentators and the candidates themselves.

To all of you respondents: How is your life going to be better with Obama or Clinton? Do you really believe that you’ll make more money? Do you think you’ll be as safe from terrorism as you are now in this country? You all want “change”…but I’m curious as to what you want to “change” from and to?

As for Iraq, they were shooting at our planes; every intelligence agency in the region was saying that they had WMDs; Hussein was not letting in weapons inspectors; he was killing tens of thousands (and yes..they ARE thankful we are there..but you’ll not hear about that from the current media); he was considered a threat.

RH, your son-in-laws are heroes. I hope and pray for a safe return for them.

Oh, my God,

Logic states that Obama looks more Hawaiian than black, as if this somehow would cause Obama or anyone who looks like Obama living in Hawaii not to contemplate his heritage of being African and White.

This is enough right here to tune out everything else Logic has to say because I feel if he can’t get something as simple about life and human beings as this correct, nothing else in his mind is right.

Logic must also be physically blind because Obama looks just what he is African and White. Hawaiians do not have the strong African features that you see in Obama. Very becoming.

Obama is not pro-gay marriage, but is pro-civil unions for gays, understanding that he does not have God given right to enforce his beliefs upon anyone.

I myself is against gay marriage, but would not have issues with our government supporting civil unions for gays, even though homosexuality is not a lifestyle I would never consider because of my Christian beliefs.

His wife, Michelle Obama was stating that she was proud for the first time in her life of being an American because of the great involvment of the people in the political process for the first time that she has been born. And, it is impressive and also makes me proud, because after all the people are the country. And, Obama plans to make thisd so even more.

Those such as Logic prefer to distort and not care about Michelle Obama’s stated reasons given for this statement, but prefer to place what they want the meaning of her statements to mean instead of the truth. Pretty twisted and warped thinking.

Logic states the rhetoric about Bush/Chaney has never been proved.
Gee, that cannot possibly be done until they are out of office, but enough have surfaced to see much of their guilt and outright lack of genuine concern for this country.

Much of everything else mentioned is pathethicly petty.

Logic, I feel that my life will be better with Obama as this country’s leader because of his willinglyness to get the people involved in the process of what goes on in Washington D.C. He understanmds that the only way for things to change is to get the people involved from the bottom up. This I have always dreamed of even before I ever heard of the name Barack Obama.

I dreamed of easy internet access to keep us little people informed and involved in and on issues before they were placed into law or not placed into law that effects us as citizens of this country. This Obama has said he plans to accomplish.

Obama is truly for open government and understands that postive honorable change can only take place from invoving the people in all processes, not just the election process. This is what a true leader is and this country has never had one such as this until Obama came along.

I agree with his approach to talking with our enemies.

I agree with his proposed heathcare policies.

By the way Logic it is not only about how Obama or anyone will benefit me only, but benefit society and people as a whole.

This is why Obama has my vote.

Logic -
I chose to answer your previous post point-by-point because I made the assumption from your blog name you are interested in logic. In your response you chose instead to bring in new material, rather than answer the points I raised, that is your privilege. So here it goes:

1. Michael Moore is not a hero of mine. While I find his choice of material for his films interesting, I do not find his films interesting. Neither do I see him being any more of a cogent spokesperson that Sean Hannity, in other words not at all.

2. Yes I was aware that the Kenyan, et. al. bombings were during the Clinton Administration — that was my point. Rice and the NSA were given the memoranda citing Al Qaeda’s involvement, but they ignored them until after the Twin Towers. By the way let’s not forget the EgyptAir crash in 1999.

I am not going to take time to answer any of the other stuff you brought up, not because I don’t have answers, but I have to go teach.

Lastly, thank you for your prayers for my sons-in-law, I can only hope you actually mean them.

Back from teaching.

I really only have one thing to modify from before about my sons-in-law. I am fairly certain they would not lay claim to any “hero” title accorded them, because, as many combat veterans are likely to say, the ones who come back alive are not the heroes, those who gave their last full measure of life are.

My real hope is that once this violent silliness is over, that the maimed, psychologically crippled, and troubled veterans who do come back are accorded the “hero” label and treated as such. Sadly, right now they are not being treated well.

D.
Unless you grew up in Hawaii as I did, you have no credibility when it comes to saying how Hawaiians look.

1.Christians are not for baby killing…are you? Obama is.
2. Michelle Obama should be taken at what she says. It wasn’t taken out of context.
3. You liberals will do anything for socialism. Socialized healthcare is what Obama wants. It doesn’t work…never has…no matter what your hero, Michael Moore, says.
4. You need to do your homework on talking to enemies. Iran, Syria, N. Korea…tell me…what would you say? They HATE us. Iran wants to wipe Israel off the planet. They sponsor terrorists that have been killing Americans for years. You liberals are so naive. You need to be better read on history and that part of the world.
5. Obama proved NOTHING as a senator in Illinois. He never crossed the aisle to work with Republicans..EVER. Why do you think he will now? Because he SAYS it? Look at his record. Weak.

You liberals want the government to solve everything and run your lives. you want the rich to be taxed even more…although they already carry the rest of the country with their taxes. You all hate responsibility and love handouts. Gimme, gimme, gimme.

Logic-
“You liberals…” in my case you would be wrong, I am not a liberal, I am radical who took to heart the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the Sermon on the Mount, and, the precept that “all men are created equal”.

I find it irresponsible for so-called “conservatives” to be so focused on their own little plot, that they are willing to give up these hard fought documents because they are afraid.

But I guess, given that the current Vice-President has declared himself not part of the Executive, nor the Legislative branch and thus outside the Constitution, the neo-cons should proudly proclaim themselves the Royalists and Tories they really are.

Have fun.
