McCain: Troop return date “not too important”
WASHINGTON _ Expect a load of reaction from John McCain’s remark on the NBC Today show this morning about the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
In a statement that has Democratic ad-makers salivating, McCain seemingly played down the significance or American troops finally coming home. Or at least that’s how it is being interpreted by Barack Obama’s campaign, which just held a conference call to highlight the remark.
Here’s how the interchange went:
MATT LAUER: If it’s (the surge) working, senator, do you now have a better estimate of when American forces can come home from Iraq?
JOHN McCAIN: No, but that’s not too important. What’s important is the casualties in Iraq.
Is the Republican Party nominee being misinterpreted here?
Let us know what you think – and you can also join me online today in a discussion beginning momentarily and running until noon.

McCain’s said time and again that combat troops will leave Iraq when they aren’t needed anymore. What’s so freakin controversial about stating the obvious? That an intellectually challenged news reader and a demonstrably naive presidential candidate can’t wrap their heads around it says more about them than anything else.
