Onder may up the ante in 9th District race

WASHINGTON–The contest to replace Rep. Kenny Hulshof, R-Columbia, is already a 10-candidate brouhaha. Now comes the news that it could get even more hotly-contested—or at least more expensive.

The AP reports that Missouri Republican Bob Onder might put more of his own money into his bid, since the so -called “millionaire’s amendment” was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court last week. The provision was designed to level the playing field for challengers to wealthy candidates who dip into their own bank accounts to finance their campaigns.
Here’s what the AP says:
“The extra cash could give Onder a lift over four other GOP candidates running in the primary. The wealthy doctor from St. Charles has already poured $250,000 into the race.
Campaign manager T.J. Maloney says Onder will wait until the final days before the Aug. 5 primary to decide.”
Five Republicans, four Democrats, and one Libertarian are competing to replace Hulshof, who is running for governor.

Once again I must ask, why would such a wealthy individual want the thankless job of congressman? I guess some people (republicans) feel the need to govern over us peons.

willys,

I’m guessing that you have been a loser in life and hate anybody who has done well. Try to get over that. Onder is a great guy, who is now dedicating his life to improving life for the people of Missouri. Perhaps someday, if you are smart enough, energetic enough and good enough, you can do the same.

Funny how you never see the media refer to Senator Kennedy as “the wealthy drunkard from Massachusetts.” Ms. Shesgreen, perhaps you don’t know Dr. Onder personally as I do, so allow me to enlighten you: Onder didn’t become “the wealthy doctor from St. Charles” through inheritance, as Senator Kennedy did. He’s not a movie star or a television comedian. Onder has become wealthy by being an outstanding student at one of the top medical schools in our nation, by establishing a private practice, and serving his patients well. And during his medical residency, Onder even found time to attend law school and pass the bar. In order words, he has become wealthy through hard work and intelligence. It’s an example that Democrats like Kennedy, the wayward children of old money, would do well to follow.

Funny that Deidre didn’t mention Democrat Ken Jacob, who has already put $50,000 in and is considering another $200K. I don’t have a problem with self-financing, but lets face the facts that both Dems and Republicans do this.

Oh, and Willy: maybe R’s self-finance because we don’t have a vast array of mega-donors and 527’s to do it for us. Think I’m kidding? 40 of the top 50 527’s in 2004 were Democrat, and the top 5 donors (3 individual donors and one married couple) poured in nearly $80 million to Democrat 527’s. Unlike you, I actually took the time to do research rather than spit out talking points based in a theme of hope-hope that the public will buy the lie hook, line and sinker.

Also, willys:

By your logic, why would a poor person want the job? I guess some people (democrats) feel the need to use public funds to make themselves wealthy.
