House GOP leader expects to gain seats in November
WASHINGTON _ With nearly 30 House GOP retirements, Many DC political analysts long ago wrote the Republican Party’s obituary for this year’s elections. But House Minority Leader John Boehner is predicting a surprise.
“I think it’s going to be a far better Republican year than most people in this town are talking about or expecting,” Boehner, R-Ohio, said at a luncheon with reporters at a downtown Washington hotel.
He even went so far as to say Republicans would gain seats in the House of Representatives but admitted it’s extremely unlikely they will regain the majority.
Boehner said he expects Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain to pick a running mate who is younger, has solid conservative credentials and who “people believe could be president.”
He wouldn’t give names, but he said McCain’s choice probably won’t be a member of Congress since all three remaining presidential candidates are Senators.
The protracted battle for the Democratic nomination will prove to be a big asset to Republicans on election day, Boehner said.
“One side is going to be sorely disappointed,” Boehner said. “What isn’t measured, what can’t be measured, is how many people are disappointed and don’t show up.”
He declined to tall specifically about resolving the Democratic race, saying both candidates have a shot at the nomination.
“I’m not sure anybody ought to get in the middle of this catfight,” he said. “If they do they’re going to get clawed.”

Why didn’t the PD report this:
Seattle Times Leaves Out McDermott’s (D) in Illegal Phone-taping Story
By Ken Shepherd | April 2, 2008 - 13:53 ET
A federal judge on April 1 ordered Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), a veteran liberal legislator and Saddam Hussein stooge, to pay Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) $1 million for an illegally-taped 1996 phone conversation. Even the Associated Press, which we’ve taken to task numerous times for dropping party labels, noted McDermott’s party affiliation. Not so the Seattle Times, McDermott’s hometown paper:
A federal judge in Washington, D.C., says Congressman Jim McDermott owes an Ohio congressman $1 million for leaking an illegally taped phone call to the media.
Today’s decision may end the dispute that began in 1996 when John Boehner (BAY’-ner) was taped talking about an ethics case involving Newt Gingrich. The tape reached McDermott who gave it two newspapers. He says it’s a free speech issue.
Boehner sued and the case has been in the courts for a decade. A federal court ruled McDermott had no right to release the call.
