WASHINGTON — Should national Republicans be fixated on the relationship, if any, between Barack Obama and Gov. Rod Blagojevich?

By some accounts, it’s about the best holiday gift that the GOP could hope for: the soon-to-be president weighted down by the potential embarrassment of staff contacts with a scandal-scarred Democratic governor.

After getting smoked in November and looking at controlling scant political real estate in DC in consequential times next year, what better tonic could there be to show some spunk and fire up the faithful and the blogosphere?

And who knows, the special election that could take place offers hope that Republicans could begin their rebuilding process.

A short time ago, national GOP chairman Mike Duncan called it “appalling that Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President Emil Jones “are continuing this embarrassment for Illinois with their backroom politics … The only way the people’s voice will be heard and Illinois can end the taint of the Bagojevich scandal is to have a special election.”

But the aggressive tactics and a Web ad aren’t resonating with some key GOPers, among them Newt Gingrich, the ex-House Speaker and party tactician.

In a letter to Duncan, Gingrich says the GOP’s “negative attack politics” is sending “a terrible signal” at a time of daunting challenges that call for bipartisanship.

“Clearly, we should insist that all taped communications regarding the Senate seat should be made public. However, that should be a matter of public policy, not an excuse for political attacks,” Gingrich wrote.

“In a time when America is facing real challenges, Republicans should be working to help the incoming president succeed in meeting them, regardless of party …This is the only way the Republican Party will become known as the ‘better solutions’ party … the only way Republicans will ever regain the trust of the voters to return to the majority.”

Republicans need to chill out … if there’s a connection, it will come to light. If there isn’t, the Republicans end up looking like idiots.

National GOP Chairman Mike Duncan is an idiot. He doesn’t live in Illinois, doesn’t know the Constitution. He should just shut up and stay out. Newt Gingrich is right. No wonder Republicans got trounced in November. With leadership like Duncan’s, he’d be the one that would be bankrupt because he couldn’t sell air conditioners in the California desert.

Except for Robert Gates, I haven’t seen any bipartisanship coming from Obama’s appointments. Giving Obama a free ride to run this country into the ground may endear the Democrats to Republicans but it won’t help elect new Republican leaders in 2012.

The Republicans with George Bush have stripped the party of its fiscal conservatism and have lost it’s focus…THAT’S why we lost the election. While Obama preached “change”…it had nothing to do with “change” and everything to do with voting against anything Bush.

Republicans need to re-focus the party on fiscal conservatism, strong defense, and increasing all paychecks. If we can stay on message, we should continue to keep pressure on the Obama Administration, calling it out for the abuses of power that will start to come along…and has begun with Obama’s brushing off of the Blagojevich debacle.

Oops … Eric Holder forgot to tell the judiciary committee about his Blagojevich link.

The GOP is playing the same old game — if you have no strengths of your own to draw upon, hope the other guy has more weaknesses than you. It is a losing game if the other guy has strengths where you don’t.

Illinois needs to get the Senate seat out of the way. gov. Blagojevich can finesse this if he sends up to the legislature at least two names, neither Jesse Jackson Jr. or Zell (I’ll assume he is the millionaire who is interested). Then the legislature can vote their approval after “vetting” both. Such a move would go a long way to resolving Blagojevicjh’s major problem with the Senate seat selection.

Yes, I would like to see the GOP just shut their traps for awhile considering their poor showing for the last two years. However, it would be nice to actually see the media - the one the Democrats continue to tell me is objective, fair, and unbiased actually show up, unlike before the election and start looking into what appears to be another Clinton-like White House.

Funny how they flew right over Chicago sending teams to Wasilla and intentionally overlooked what was brewing in Chicago just to get their man elected. Forget a “free” press, how about an “honest” press.

Hey, Blago said it best; “**&%^&**” Obama, he won’t pay to play! Well, *&^&* him!”

GOP Yappers beware, 2010 will be your true demise when there are Democratic super-majorities in the US House and Senate.
