THIS JUST IN: “Mad About You” star Helen Hunt will be the keynote speaker kicking off this year’s 31st Annual St. Louis Jewish Book Festival on Nov. 1 at the new Staenberg Family Complex at the Jewish Community Center in Creve Coeur.

Hunt’s co-star on the show, Paul Reiser, was the festival’s keynote speaker in 2007 and had such a good time here that he persuaded Hunt to accept the invitation to open this year’s festival, according to organizers.

The Academy Award-winning actress will be interviewed on stage and in front of the Festival audience by KMOX NewsTalk Radio’s Charlie Brennan. She will also take questions from the audience. Following her talk, Hunt will be the guest of honor at a gala patron dinner at the Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet. Eileen Edelman, Kitty Gross and Judy Schwartz Jaffe are co-chairing the dinner.

When Reiser was here he talked about those who viewed “Mad About You,” as a show about a relationship between a Jew and a non-Jew. “I never conceived it as a show about a Jew and a non-Jew. When Helen auditioned, she was perfect for the part … Actually, (she) seems very Jewish since she is smart and funny, and in real life she is partly Jewish.

Darla Grossberg and Gail Feldstein are co-chairing the festival, which runs through Nov. 11. Aside from a vast array of authors, there will be a concert event with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and a special “Missouri’s Own Local Authors” program.

Helen Hunt?! What does she have to do with Judaism or the St. Louis Jewish community? As bad or worse as Goldie Hawn, who was the not-so-hot celeb spokesperson a few years ago. Did Hunt write a book? I understand the JCC spends a lot of money to fly in these celebrities to say a few words and then leave. How does having a TV/movie “star” like Helen Hunt uplift the book festival? What a waste of time and money–and of opportunity! Surely there’s someone well-known out there who is truly compelling, dynamic and thought-provoking–someone who has made a real contribution. This seems like a very lame choice.

You Hunt haters need to get a life or eat pork. She’s a great public speaker. She’s a draw. That’s the purpose of a keynoter, to bring in a bigger audience. You want Oprah to headline your event, call her and open your wallets. Otherwise, shut your yappers.

Why not have a 10k run to open the festival and wind up with a Hot Dog eating contest?

A jewish book festival sounds like a major drag. Jews all standing around pointing accusing fingers at whites and blaming them for the holocaust. B-O-R-I-N-G!

I’d attend if they had a spokesperson that could finally show real proof that there were gas chambers and the burial pits that no one else has been able to find. I’d also like the spokesperson to defend the 6 Million claim when the plaques at the “so called” Death Camps only total 1.8 Million. Until then this is just a Snake Oil Show, a traveling circus.

I remember years ago now, I was working for a jewish owned computer leasing firm in Creve Coeur. It was a privately held company and all of the top mgmt was jewish (hmm… seems to be unrepresentative of their population numbers). One of the managers once told me: “Jesus was a jew and you kneel to him, someday you will kneel to us as well.” He did seem to believe what he was saying. When I objected to this (several names come to mind) “individual” telling me a “raping a nun joke” he called me an anti-semite and reported me to the rest of the management. I wasn’t long for the door after that. NEVER stand up to the “Tribe” it is VERBOTEN!

WOW! I mean…wow! I grew up in St Louis and left 9 years ago for a job in NY. Over the last year, I’ve been considering moving back, in fact I’m coming next weekend to look at several houses. After reading comments like these, I;m shocked and reminded why I ultimately left. No matter how many sculpture parks and sexy lofts you build, St Louis will always remain a little hick hamlet on the banks of a giant mud run-off.
