CEASE AND DESIST LETTER TO BE FILED: Steve DeBellis, who has been publishing a nostalgic-style newspaper named the St. Louis Globe-Democrat six times a year for nearly 15 years, said his attorney is filing a letter today ordering Dan Rositano to stop using the name.

DeBellis discovered the name had been abandoned in 1995, which is when he began using it to publish his newspapers. In 2000, he registered it as the name of his business with the Missouri Secretary of State’s office.

DeBellis said his attorney, Morris Turek, told him that he has a common law right to the trademark name.

Rositano announced yesterday that he was the publisher of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and that he was resurrecting the newspaper as an online publication beginning Dec. 8.

When questioned further about his use of the name, Rositano — the former director of information and technology at KPLR (Channel 11) — acknowledged his application for the right to use the St. Louis Globe-Democrat trademark was “pending.”

Is that the same opportunistic Steve DeBellis who snatched up the “Lemp” beer name from Falstaff, and is/was “brewing” Lemp [read generic, as in Billy beer]?

It’s not like I’ve seen a “St. Louis Globe-Democrat” published anywhere in print or online. Give the name to Rostano, who will actually use it!

Is the St.Louis Globe-Democrat on-line “newspaper” going to have a Republican/right political editorial view point to compete with the Post-Dispatch liberal/Democratic view point?I remember the original Globe-Democrat paper that ceases publication in the mid-80’s to be a “Republican” newspaper.

DeBellis has put out his little nostalgic newspaper for years now under the Globe-Democrat name. He is one of the good guys in St. Louis.

if you want it to be “really” Republican, hire Sarah Palin to be the editor–we all know how “unbiased” she is…it would also put to good use that “journalism” degree she got from one of the five colleges she attended…though the pay is most likely not in line with her $100k speaking engagement fees.

For the benefit of those who have been living in a cave (the Lemp cave?) Falstaff never owned the Lemp name. Lemp came out with Falstaff as one of their brands, just like AB came out with Michelob. As far as the Globe, use constitutes the strongest proof of ownership in the eyes of the law, and the Globe has been published every single year for the past 15 years under Steve DeBellis’ ownership. If Garrick has an axe to grind, I suggest he contact Lizzie Borden.

Funny, I keep reading that DeBellis’ Globe-Democrat has come out every year for 15 years, but I’ve never seen or heard of it until now. Hopefully this new online edition of the old rag is more relevant and visible in the community.
