Can a girl work a bow tie?
Debra Bass
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

I was window shopping on the web as I am want to do and I saw that local designers for Bespoke Couture are having a great sale on some menswear items they are trying to clear out.

Ties from the luxury brand that normally sell for $250 are now $62 and ties that retail for $138.95 are now going for $20. And then there are the bowties, which are all reasonably priced at $19.95 (two of the styles available is shown along the left). I’m told that a good bowtie is hard to find and I’m also told that if you can’t tie a “real bow tie then you shouldn’t wear one (Translation: No clip-ons, please.)

So my question is, “Can a girl rock a bow tie… without looking like Exhibit A at right?” This look earned Rebecca Romijn much criticism in 2006 and it’s defines how NOT to wear a bow tie.

And by girl, I mean me. I guess we’ll find out. I ordered two and I can’t wait for the arrival. I just glanced through Google Images and sadly, the only instances of girls in bowties that I could find were Playboy bunnies, which is not the look I’m going for. So I’ll keep you posted.

But first things first, I’ll need lessons on how to tie the darn thing.

If you want to check out some of the ties and bow tie options up for sale, head to Mark Austin Bespoke Couture. The line of menswear that includes custom-made suits, shirts and shoes and now a growing women’s line at Marlon Austin Bespoke Couture is designed by St. Louis twins Mark and Marlon Austin, who work out of home offices in the Central West End, but have the headquarters based in Chicago at 1 Magnificient Mile Center.
