Speculation rampant on Michelle Obama inauguration gown

Will she wear red, white or blue or will she shake things up with a nonpartisan yellow?

Will she be regal, corporate, princess or diva?

Will she wear something off-the-rack?

So much to think about.

Well, yesterday’s Women’s Wear Daily added to the Obama dress watch with a slew of wonderful sketches from top fashion houses around the nation.

Among the designers featured (clockwise from top left) Monique Lhuillier, Diane Von Furstenberg, Badgley Mischka, Christian Lacroix, Betsey Johnson, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la  Renta and Issac Mizrahi (the latter two offered up styles for Sasha and Malia as well, click any image to enlarge).

The 35 sketches featured were mere speculation and just the fact that they were published means that Obama would probably not select them. WWD reports that some notable designers opted out of submitted sketches precisely because they are under close consideration for the dress Obama will select from in January.

Still, WWD, the most esteemed fashion newspaper in the world, was able to convince more than 30 designers to submit their ideal look for Obama. The fashion industry overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama’s campaign for president and many even designed exclusive merchandise sold on his website to raise campaign funds.

American designers are courting the First Lady-elect actively because they expect her to once again elevate America’s design houses by flaunting their apparel on the world’s highest stage.

Victoria Beckham may cause a splash with a snazzy frock, but Obama’s inaugural gown will go down in history. The photos will appear in newspapers and magazines all over the globe. It’s an opportunity worth jockeying for.

But by now, we’ve come to expect a personal style from Obama that is feircely independent. She never looks “styled” even though she’s stylish.

Obama, obviously, dresses for herself and like her husband manages to always look terribly comfortable having her every movement watched and analyzed.

The WWD story reports: “Step aside, Angelina. You too, Madonna, not to mention the bevy of pop tarts, gossip girls, ‘High School Musical’ grads and even potential Oscar divas, now all suddenly second-tier.

The American fashion industry hasn’t had a catch this big since, well, since another icon of Democratic chic took up residency on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1961.”

How about something half black, half white?

Tim,

Oh dear Tim! You have mistakenly taken issue with me. I wasn’t the one, for that matter–I heard no one but yourself call you a conservative racist card-carrying member of the KKK. Those were your words. As a result, I guess you know yourself best.

You had a whole day for a snappy comeback, and that is the best you could come up with? What an utter disappointment you turned out to be…

Deb’s style file is a blog for fashion and style, not politics, and we regular posters come here to for enjoyment and to get a regular “fix” on all things fashionista. Please take your political hatchets elsewhere. This just isn’t the place to vent your spleen, to name-call, or to stir up controversy. What I’m trying to say to Tim and Hunch and Mike and the rest of you boys who wouldn’t otherwise be visiting this blog except for the fact that you saw a mention of the first family and took it as an opportunity to be disrespectful is: Don’t go away mad, just go away!

Karen, your obvious hate for men not withstanding, it was Diva who first brought politics into this little waste of space, yet you conveniently ignore her in your little list. You must be a regular to Deb’s. Most people can handle 20+ posts and remember everything, but in this corner of cyberspace you don’t usually have to read more than two or three at a time, so the strain on your mental capacities is understandable. How cute that you stuck up for her ignorance. Did you make a fist and shout “Girl Power” after you wrote that?

Hunch doesnt know the facts. Clearly. She spent ALASKA’s money on a wardrobe that couldn’t do much for her attitude.

Way to be all over the discussion Jasmine. Five days after the fact is very impressive…

So what if Sarah Palin’s clothes were bought by the donors? SO WHAT? I never got the issue anyway. The RNC wanted her to look a certain way and they made sure of it. It was a legitimate expense in a campaign that cost both sides millions of dollars. So Sarah got some St John’s Knits to look good! Frankly, I assume the president and first lady get a stipend for clothes, etc. They represent us and need to look the part.

Discussions like this show how many Americans have no clue. They get incensed at things that are not necessarily a symptom of largess, but instead done for legitimate reasons. Granted, some things become insensitive or in your face in a down economy. But you liberals out there, I guarantee that Michelle Obama’s wardrobe won’t be paid all by her for the next 4 years, and I hope it’s not. I want my leaders in the White House to look the part.

So again, so many with no freakin’ clue.

Who cares! People has more important things to worry about than what will be worn in January…like how will the bills get paid, being out of work or close to losing your job etc etc.

Ignore the trolls, like Tim and Hunch — they just want to stir up trouble. Me? I’m hear to talk fashion!

I agree that a glam look would not be appropriate, given the current economic crisis. But the gown must still be stunning. (I won’t say that Michelle must look stunning, because she does that no matter what she’s wearing.)

I like the Oscar de la Renta sketches. There’s a simple and beautiful look, one that shows off the new First Lady’s great figure and lovely skin tone, without being too glitzy. Putting the two little girls in red and blue is a great idea too!
