“Glamour” praised for plus-size nude

I admit it, sometimes models look like aliens. And this comes from someone who knows a lot of them personally.

There’s just something a little surreal about them, in a good way. They are fun to look at, but when they are all dolled up, I think perhaps they are not of this world. It’s like being surrounded by the cutest kid from every high school in one spot. It’s spooky.

I am not alone. The latest photo of a nude woman in the pages of September’s “Glamour” generated a deluge of effusive responses.

The image is shocking not because of air-brush abuse or people crying foul on the grounds of gratuitous objectification. This time people are applauding.

The photo of Lizzie Miller, a 20-year-old plus-sized model in the nude, with hair that looks like she just slipped out of a tub is the opposite of your typical fashion magazine image.

Not just because she’s naked with nearly invisible makeup, but because she’s unapologetic about her stomach pooch.

There’s not careful posing to minimizeĀ  lumps and bumps. She’s not sucking it in, tucked into layers of spandex body shapers or glaring past the camera at a steely horizon. She’s not a supermodel or a celebrity.

She’s part of a small feature on “being comfortable in your own skin.”

And the most shocking thing about her is that she has a “belly that looks … wait for it … normal,” wrote Glamour’s editor-in-chief Cindi Leive in herĀ  “On the C.L.”

Though Miller of San Jose works as a plus-size model because of modeling industry standards that deem even the low double digits Rubenesque, Leive admits, “hello, at size 12 she’s actually ‘normal size’.”

Leive asked her readers to tell her what they loved about the picture about a week ago and the response was overwhelming. At present there are more than 500 comments that are for the most part glowing and wildly enthusiastic.

People are thrilled that they can finally see someone who looks like them…. and … wait for it … looks happy about it.

When you usually see a body like Lizzie’s in a fashion magazine, it’s the “before” photo in a makeover.

It’s kinda nice to see someone down to Earth being celebrated. Let’s see where we stand when the novelty wears off.

UPDATE: The comments to this post are now subject to approval before they can be publicly viewed. Sorry, but this topic has generated much dialogue beyond our “PG” rating system.

NEW UPDATE: In response to the many, many critical comments below, I’ve added another picture of Lizzie. I’ll let it speak for itself.

It’s about time we see some normal women in the magazines!

gross! Please do some sit-ups and try out the treadmill woman!

There is a reason that this type of photo isn’t normally shown– its disgusting!

She’s gorgeous. I wish that magazines and other media would quit referring to average, normal sized women as “plus sized.” Those of us women who ARE truly “plus-sized” understand that there is a stigma attached to this term whether we love ourselves the way we are or not. There is nothing wrong with being normal, average, healthy sized!

That is not normal, women. That is overweight and foul. I know that for some reason, the vast majority of women in this town are grossly overweight, but do not kid yourself into considering that ‘normal.’ I have personally been with 18 women in the nude, and none have had a flabby, nasty stomach like that.
Having a gut that hangs over like that is an embarrassment and shows a lack of self-respect and self-discipline.
Put down the Imos, pick up a piece of fruit. Try going for a run, doing sit-ups, or even walking, but please do not be an apologist who thinks being fat is ‘normal.’
Thank God I had a gorgeous girl already when I moved here, b/c the pickings are slim. Unlike the women.

skin deep,
you are kidding yourself calling people like yourself and that girl above healthy sized. there is nothing healthy about being obese and overweight.
everybody tries to be politically correct and put tags on this like “plus sized” instead of calling it what it is, which is FAT.
please do not spread your poison around the boards and around the town calling it “healthy sized.” i see far too many middle/high school aged girls in town who are already waling around with pooches hanging over their bikini bottoms, when they should be in the prime of their physical lives. it’s not healthy, and you are furthering the trend.

why do you libs always feel the need to take your clothes off ? is it attention you need ? sadly, if you have to take your clothes off to get attention, isn’t that like tying a bone around your neck so the dog will play with you ?

Joe, my sentiments exactly. I think she’s hot. If you others think ‘most’ women are built much better than that, take a trip to your local swimming pool. People look much different in their clothes.

Overweight? Are you KIDDING me????

She’s gorgeous! Ok, so she doesn’t have a washboard stomach; that doesn’t make her ‘fat’. There’s a huge distinction between fit and thin, but those of you who think she’s fat are missing that. OH, one quick note: anyone who sits up and leans over will have a bit of stomach pooch, male or female, regardless of how fit they are. that’s how the body works.

And I’m curious how many of you are guys. Perhaps you’ve bought into the perfection model of attactiveness?

lmao: I’m not a ‘dem’, and there’s pretty much nothing wrong with the human body. Sorry that you’re ashamed of yours. That doesn’t mean I advocate running around naked in public, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with pictures like the above.

Have any of you haters ever seen nude photos or porn from the early 20th century? That picture above is what women used to looked like. It was considered a privilage to have some meat on your bones. That picture is not an obese woman, but of a healthy woman. My stomach looks like that and I’m 35 years old, had two kids, I’m 5′4″ and weigh 122 lbs well within the normal range. Pregnancy wreaks havoc on your body. Super skinny woman are unpleasant to be around, they are cranky because they are always hungry.
