HITS AND MISSES

HITS

Christina Applegate: A beautiful sunshine color on a great Roberto Cavalli dress. The defined waist and ensuing pleated volume beneath is just a lovely look.
Olivia Wilde: The delicate volumes of pink tulle in tiny ruffles on this delightful strapless Reem Acra gown skillfully marries drama and femininity.

Kate Winslet: The YSL dress speaks to her serious, stately beauty. It’s simple and perfect — both sexy and regal.

MISSES

Jennifer Lopez: Lopez is the epitome of too much and too little, not to mention too shiny, too oily and too bare. From the back, this Marchesa gown cuts just above her greatest asset. She’s got the figure, but that doesn’t make it right.

Freida Pinto (of “Slumdog Millionaire”): Loved the movie and loved her in it, but this mustard dress is a mistake. Not the color, but the draping is strange, and this Christian Lacroix couture dress just looks unfinished.

Renee Zellweger: There are faux pas and then there is just mass confusion. Zellweger’s Carolina Herrera dress is ill-conceived. The inexplicable sheer front with nude undertones is more school marm than chic.

Notice that the skinny little girls in the unthreatening dresses nods for best-dressed, while the voluptuous curvy women in the “I-just-got-out-of-bed-with-your-man frocks” got the nods for fashion misses. Those ‘bed-babes’ are generating buzz about themselves and not the labels they’re wearing. Women noticed the ‘hits’ while men noticed the ‘misses.’ Play to your audience.
