Barneys loves Target

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Women’s Wear Daily said it, so it must be true.

Target Corp. and Barneys New York have jumped into retail bed together. And theĀ  mass market chain known as bargainista central is now selling it’s wares at Barneys’ Madison Avenue flagship store. Target doesn’t yet have a Manhattan address. But the madness will only last Friday until Sunday.

Target has a new eco-friendly line of Rogan for Target’s very popular Go International line. The designer Rogan Gregory who will be new to Target’s populace but old school to Barney’s has produced $15 to $45 items for Target. It’s Barneys line includes $300 dresses as well as three-digit jackets and slacks.

So why are they co-mingling? No one knows. Rabid Target shoppers are not typically Barneys faithful. But if the economy remains the way it is maybe there will be more hi-lo fashion mixes in extremes such as this.

However, the mix is a little silly. Barneys is about cache and exclusivity and Target is really about cute but cheap chic. It might be thrilling to actually walk out of Barneys with a bag full of treats under $100, but I don’t really see what Barneys is getting out of the deal.

Exclusivity and cachet re stores mean less in today’s Internet economy. Everyone buys a little high and a little low, it seems. People brag as much about the bargains they get at Target as they do about their scores from Saks. Barney’s is getting name recognition with a broader market beyond the high fashion crowd. I think they’re betting that people who now buy a lot of their clothes at Target will try the Rogan line. Eventually these shoppers will have more money, money that they may be moved to spend at Barney’s after getting a taste of it via Rogan at Target. I think the coupling is very forward-thinking of both parties…and I think both companies dig the fact that people are surprised by their unexpected marriage. I definitely am moved to check out the clothes when they show up in Target next week!
