Speculation rampant on Michelle Obama inauguration gown

Will she wear red, white or blue or will she shake things up with a nonpartisan yellow?

Will she be regal, corporate, princess or diva?

Will she wear something off-the-rack?

So much to think about.

Well, yesterday’s Women’s Wear Daily added to the Obama dress watch with a slew of wonderful sketches from top fashion houses around the nation.

Among the designers featured (clockwise from top left) Monique Lhuillier, Diane Von Furstenberg, Badgley Mischka, Christian Lacroix, Betsey Johnson, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la  Renta and Issac Mizrahi (the latter two offered up styles for Sasha and Malia as well, click any image to enlarge).

The 35 sketches featured were mere speculation and just the fact that they were published means that Obama would probably not select them. WWD reports that some notable designers opted out of submitted sketches precisely because they are under close consideration for the dress Obama will select from in January.

Still, WWD, the most esteemed fashion newspaper in the world, was able to convince more than 30 designers to submit their ideal look for Obama. The fashion industry overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama’s campaign for president and many even designed exclusive merchandise sold on his website to raise campaign funds.

American designers are courting the First Lady-elect actively because they expect her to once again elevate America’s design houses by flaunting their apparel on the world’s highest stage.

Victoria Beckham may cause a splash with a snazzy frock, but Obama’s inaugural gown will go down in history. The photos will appear in newspapers and magazines all over the globe. It’s an opportunity worth jockeying for.

But by now, we’ve come to expect a personal style from Obama that is feircely independent. She never looks “styled” even though she’s stylish.

Obama, obviously, dresses for herself and like her husband manages to always look terribly comfortable having her every movement watched and analyzed.

The WWD story reports: “Step aside, Angelina. You too, Madonna, not to mention the bevy of pop tarts, gossip girls, ‘High School Musical’ grads and even potential Oscar divas, now all suddenly second-tier.

The American fashion industry hasn’t had a catch this big since, well, since another icon of Democratic chic took up residency on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1961.”

Regardless of who she wears, unless it includes a mask it won’t help…

You get her Tim! Wow…you really sucker-punched our next First Lady. So sorry that you seem to have issues with her. For what, I have no idea and surely you really don’t either. Of her, what do we know to wish that her inaugural dress include a mask? Beauty–check! Brains–check! Grace–check! Decorum–check! Elegance–check! Intellect–check! Oh yeah, and her husband is THE PRESIDENT-ELECT of the USA–check!

Tim, get over yourself and get with the fact, for the next four years (at least) she will be representing you and all Americans as our next First Lady. Not only does President-Elect Obama enter the eternal pages of history, so too does his most beautiful wife. Here’s to her!

She looks very stylish in what ever she wears. I am sure she will choose something very elegant.

Tim, I didn’t vote for Obama, and you make me sad to apparently be on the same side. You should treat people with more respect. You are apparently a no-class buffoon.

So let me get this straight. We’re discussing Michelle Obama’s wardrobe for everything that’s right about it. But, Sarah Palin’s wardrobe was discussed for everything that’s wrong about it. Interesting….

Hunch,

Let’s be clear here, the difference between Obama and Palin’s situation is that the Obama’s spend their own personal money on their own clothes while Palin used money donated by supporters for their actual political campaign.

Diva, why are you making assumptions? Do you know for a fact that Michelle Obama bought her own clothes? Did you know that Palin is donating her clothes to charity? Just pointing out the ever present liberal bias in the media. Granted, this blog is a much smaller scale, but the precedent still rings true.

Hunch,

I am not one to assume, despite your own tendency for such! I watched Michelle Obama on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show during which she made the following statement: “But our policy has always been whatever we wear, for us, we buy.” Just so that you can check it out yourself (maybe even verify the ever present liberal bias in the media) by going to: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20236162,00.html or even http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPxFPw40kBw.

Have a good one…and be careful of those assumptions!

Hunch,

My mistake…I actually did make an assumption that the portion of her statement would be in that YouTube clip. It actually appears here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szLefHwrwdI&feature=related. Oh and let me know to which charity organizations Palin donated her clothes.

Thanks!
