There was just something so totally wrong about the whole thing. I like flip flops, such as the nononsense justflops pair at the left for $20. The ultimate in casual uniform attire. I still think they should be banned from offices, but I’m not going to crucify anyone for it. OK, so I will stare with disapproval, but whatever. Now, I can say, at least they aren’t fishflops. For a $10 upgrade on the justflops, you can get shoes embellished with little soccerballs, tiny starfish and even chili peppers and other all-nonsense accessories that should never be attached to your feet like fake fruit crawling with insects.

As everyone attempts to break out of pigeon-holes and supply more and more impulse buy items, the Gap (known for T-shirts, knits and denim) is drifting into the world of costume jewelry. And it’s pretty cute, because it looks a lot like some of the Target jewels that the retail chain is probably piggybacking on. The ribbon and bead necklace at right goes for about $29.50. Not a bad price, especially when you can already anticipate the $9.99 sale price.

The line debuts in July and will initially be featured in about 200 doors. Expect woven, natural styles that will look good paired with Gap favorites.

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation:

1. If you have had 5 or more sunburns in your lifetime it doubles your risk of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.
2. Seek shade. Remember the sun’s rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Simple rule: If your shadow is shorter than you are, seek shade.
3. Wear protective clothing when possible. For example, long-sleeved shirts, pants, wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses. But take note: if the T-shirt is so thin that you can see through it. The sun’s rays can penetrate it too, so you still need sunblock on your skin.
4. Generously apply a broad-spectrum SPF of 15 or higher to all exposed skin everyday before going outdoors.
5. Examine your skin from head to toe every month. If you notice a bleeding, growing or new mole, or any other significant change, schedule an appointment with your physician immediately. And consult a dermatologist annually.

It goes without saying, but a good summer tan is not worth taking years off your life. And I don’t want to scare you, but studies show that everyday “incidental” exposure is a larger culprit in sun damage than intensive tanning sessions. That probably has something to do with the cumulative effects of exposure daily compared with the less frequent stints at the pool or beach or tanning salon baking at short intervals.

But if you absolutely can’t become part of the shade worshipers, do become part of the SPF faithful with products like Eucerin’s daily body lotion with SPF. As will all SPF products you have to reapply every few hours for it to remain effective, but a little help is better than nothing at all. Stay mindful and try prev

A new documentary film, “America the Beautiful,” asks the question that none of the fashion faithful (yes, I’m talking about me, too) are particularly happy to answer. Are we obsessed with beauty? The answer is yes, but the real question is what are the residual effects of this obsession. As a fashion editor in the mid-West, I do wonder about how often to feature a plus-sized model or how skinny is OK? I fret about diversity of images including ethnicity and size. And to be honest, thin often wins. And pretty always wins, even though model good looks by definition are a small percentage of the population.

So should I be concerned about featuring unattractive models?

And while I ponder that, I’ve got to come to terms with the fact that I’m part of “the media” this film will refer to as examples of who is corrupting our youth.

A teenager featured in the film explains matter-of-factly that, “Plastic surgery is a woman’s best friend.” Great. Now, I’ve got that on my conscious. The documentary goes on to show that photo shop technology in glamor magazines is so advanced that even the models on the covers don’t look as good as their published visage. So it raises the beauty bar by displaying a virtually unattainable level of perfection that many young girls believe is attainable.

The movie casts a glaring eye on a society where high school students receive boob jobs for graduation and reality television shows glorify plastic surgery.

Filmmaker Darryl Roberts has already won awards on the festival circuit with this documentary, which opens in New York City in August and across the country thereafter. Let’s hope the Tivoli is on the route.

Find out why this Scallop Dot Embroidered Organza Dress by Milly is a fall must-have according to the designer at nordstrom.com. The retailer has launched a new feature to entice the ever-growing population of online shoppers and browsers to buy higher end specialty items like their designer pre-sale collections months in advance. It’s a niche market, so any advances would likely be considered a success. But the new, experimental tactics are really valid for the younger video obsessed. Designer Michele Smith of Milly comes across as smart, attractive, chic and appropriately girly (just like her clothing line). She adds details that get lost in written descriptions. When she discusses the luxe lining in all the garments, she shows off details and a model offers a 360-degree view of each garment, including different styling options.

Nordstrom’s experiment in the virtual truck show is sure to attract a lot of attention and probably a good number of sales. It’s compelling to hear the inspiration for items and perhaps have the designer point out a clever detail you overlooked. The videos are each quick at about 20 to 40 seconds each, so it doesn’t feel like a chore to load them or view them, but be warned. Those seconds add up. Michele discusses 16 items in 13 views and it’s a testament to Michele and the video editing crew that avid shoppers will be curious to watch more than a few.

The customized Barack Obama kicks by sneaker artist Van Taylor were spotted on the hip hooves of Sean Diddy Combs. The shoes were a gift from his “step son’ish” (I have no idea what that means) Quincy Brown, who is the first son of Kim Porter and R&B singer Al B Sure, as a Father’s Day Gift, according to the marketing team for the shoes. Please note that there is no implication that any of the money from the sales actually go to the Obama campaign or if the shoes are endorsed by the campaign. (I’ll ask.)

The hand-painted Obama Sneakers are priced at $500 and the canvas is a pair of Nike Air Force Ones. On side says “Yes We Can” and the other side says “Change.” But real question is how much are you willing to pay for that?

Everyone’s invited to a Trunk Show tomorrow, June 21 from 11- 4 pm at Suite 100 at the Pageant. It will not be the last you’ll see of Lesley Tempe (she’s got family here and some shops that carry her merchandise so she’ll be back), but this would be a nice opportunity to buy some of her original designs on sale and wish her luck before she leaves in two weeks.

The show will also feature items from Love Bird Jewelry and STL designer Miriam Coffey.

Squasht by Les’s asthetic has a handmade quality but the people who wear her stuff don’t look like Suzy homemaker. The clothes are consciously hip in a unique grudge pop sort of way, but not trendy. And her silhouettes are great for a variety of body shapes, not just the waif-set.

Some of the other designers featured at Suite 100 are AngelRox, Alternative Apparel, Cardboard Robot, Mosquitohead, Blood is the New Black, 99 Dealers amd Me Against the World. Now, doesn’t that sond like a happy-go-lucky bunch.

If nothing else, stop by to socialize at the new espresso bar and enjoy the very cool graphics on the walls. And, if you’re clever, you may notice that there’s another Tempe on display in the shop (Lesley’s brother’s artwork). For the uninitiated, here’s the address and a link to the website:
