Denim from polished hippie to hilly billy grunge, Part I
The last two shows on Sunday ended up representing two fashion extremes. Justin Timberlake’s William Rast collection (he’s one of the names behind the brand and the only one people will recognize) ventured into the back woods of Tennessee for a denim based collection that at times gave new meaning to grunge. A few pants looked as if they had been worn while falling down a cliff, tumbling into a muddy stream and then dragged by a pick-up. I like the “distressed” look, but some of these things just looked abused. What I did find cute was a tuxedo-style blazer with squared lapels and piping that looked like a hip updated 50s prom tux paired with a vest and jeans that were slightly less molested. However, I found the unfortunate use of fringe on stretch pants, jackets and boots really poorly done. The fringe didn’t just look out of place, but cheap. And just in case you’re confused, this is supposed to be a spring 09 collection, so I didn’t get the fall leaves, heavy jackets and plaid blanket sized scarves. Check out the video to see an AP report on the collection. You would be seeing my video of the finale with JT’s curtain call, but I can’t get technology to cooperate with me today. Look for the the whole William Rast movie here and see the men’s and women’s collection.
