The Pope’s astronomer to speak in St. Louis
The relationship between science and religion will be explored Friday, April 17 during a free lecture “Why Does the Pope Have an Astronomer?”
The lecture will be given by none other than the Pope’s astronomer himself, Brother Guy Consolmagno.
Consolmagno is a professional astronomer and will talk about the Vatican Observatory and his unusual role as chief star gazer for Catholics.
Consolmagno, a Jesuit brother, believes that is both possible - and reasonable - to believe deeply both in science and religon. He holds a Ph.D in Planetary Sciences from the University of Arizona. Before entering the Jesuit order, He was a researcher at MIT, Harvard and Peace Corps volunteer.
The lecture is open to the public at will be featured at the April meeting of the St. Louis Astronomical Society. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. and will take place in Room 162 of McDonnell Hall on the Washington University campus. McDonnell Hall is accessible from Forsyth Boulevard via Tolman Way.
Sounds like a fascinating talk. Check back next Friday following the lecture for a new posting on this talk by EcoSpeak.

………This article made me remember a visit to Florence (Firenze) Italy. Near the city center was a church called Santa Croce. Among the many noteworthy entombed inside of the church were Michelangelo, Dante, Rossini, Machiavelli, and Galileo Galilei.
I’ll never forget that Galileo’s tomb had figures looking skyward, and that it also had a diagram of the solar system on it, with the Sun at it’s center.
Sounds like an interesting meeting, perhapse they will address the science behind the pope’s decision to tell Africans that Condoms don’t help against aids.
Yes, “the Bard”, I’m certain that will be addressed. It’s the only reason I’m going!!!!
Keep your nasty thoughts about the Pope off the internet. You must be non-believers and I imagine not so happy with your lives. We’ll pray for you,the Pope and I!!
