As piles of electronics or “E” waste build across the country, so grows the number of special events aimed at collecting all that junk for recycling.

EcoSpeak gets notices of these events all the time.

It’s quite unusual, however, to hear of events that have drop-off locations in a major downtown area, a daily destination for thousands of us office drones.

But on Friday, the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis announced just that - the city’s first downtown-based electronics recycling drive that’s scheduled for June 24 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

There are two drop off locations - the Gateway One Building at 701 Market Street and also 1300 Market Street. Also, some pickup services will be offered.

The event recycler is Web Innovation and Technology Services of St. Louis. which has a zero landfill policy so don’t worry about your television ended up some third world country. Another neat thing about WITS is that they refurbish many of the computers they collect and donate them to needy families.

The event organizers have launched a website with all the details. Like other “e-waste” drives, a small fee will be charged to take certain items that contain hazardous materials such as monitors and televisions.

EcoSpeak anticipates a big turnout for this event given its timing with the digital TV conversion. Undoubtedly, there will soon be lots of obsolete televisions out there.

If you can’t make this event, check out the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ website, which has a list of the state’s electronics recyclers.

If you knew EPC like I know EPC, you’d BOYCOTT them too!

@ Boycott: What is the EPC? It is common practice to write out the entire name of an organization if it is not mentioned in the article or in your post. That way we all know what you are referring to. Are you boycotting common sense and grammar too?

Thanks for the info on this event Kim.
