Cora Island announcement tomorrow
Kim McGuire
St. Louis Post-Dispatch

In Sunday’s Post-Dispatch, we told you about an announcement scheduled to take place tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area regarding the acquisition of Cora Island.

Because of the oppressively hot weather, that announcement is being moved from the boat ramp to the visitor’s center. Having been down there last week, this is a good thing. Air conditioning will be most welcomed.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently purchased the island in St. Charles County and are expected to allow some public recreation there. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will manage the property, which is near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.

Cora Island, almost 1,500 acres of former farmland, could be a bird lover’s paradise. Herons, pelicans, and egrets are just of the few of the birds spotted there last week.
