Erin Brockovich is scheduled to meet with residents of Leadwood tonight to discuss the community’s concerns about how mining waste is being handled in the Old Lead Belt.

Leadwood resident Christy Briley called Brockovich after a contractor for Doe Run spilled sludge on her property.

Since then, local residents have raised many other issues, many of the them connected to the cleanup of mine tailings in St. Francois County.

Doe Run is currently cleaning up those piles under the supervision of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Briley said Monday that Brockovich is bringing attorney from both Los Angeles and Kansas City with her to the meeting, which is at 6 p.m. tonight at the Leadwood Middle School.

So, who is Erin Brockovich?

Someone explained this to me the other day, and Ok, so she’s famous in California somehow for being a whistleblower on PG&E. But she doesn’t know squat about lead abatement, southeast Missouri, or Doe Run (who, by the way, *inherited* most of the problems they face from other companies.)

Curious what bringing someone like this is intended to accomplish. Doe Run is pretty impervious to public opinion, IMO. And we’re not California. There is a school of thought that the Lead Belt may be the anti-California, actually.

Elisa-
Erin Brockovich has become an accomplished advocate for residents dealing with issues such as the water contamination issue in California that her movie portrayed. If you go to her website it would be pretty obvious what she has been doing. She has many connections and has helped many people.

Brockovich was a no show at the meeting. Her lead environmental investigator said she had an inner ear problem that prevented her from flying. This is the second time health problems have prevented Brockovich from attending a Leadwood meeting. NO word yet on whether she’ll reschedule.

Just a law firm using her name since there is a tinge of celebrity associated…..

I don’t know how I feel about her not showing up for the meeting. I have mixed feelings about the fact that she was a no show for the meeting. I am sure that she very well may have an inner ear problem or whatever but for her to have cancelled now for the second time, that seems a little odd. I just feel badly for the people who were really relying on her name and connections to be a part of their cause. I am sure that she knows the importance of making good on her word when it comes to this kind of work. It isn’t as though she is just missing another day at the office. She is making an immense contribution to their lives by being a part of their cause. The health issues that these people face or major and are such an ignored problem in this day and age. Gov’ts are very divided when it comes to environmental causes that you would automatically assume would be favored and taken care of by the government. Not so! Their is such a high level of Political garbage that goes on when it comes to this that people suffer much more than they ever should. So many people can be bought my major companies to keep their mouths shut and to turn a blind eye, creating a lot of red tape and closed doors. I really do think that most communities can get as much help as they possibly can and someone like Erin is able to make it that much easier and possible whereas it just may not have been without her name. I just hope that she really does care still and that she hasn’t just become this smoke screen celebutrash now that is lost to the cause and is no longer involved the way she used to be. I know at one time she cared deeply about all of these issues. I am sure that she still does!!
