Watch parties in 14 states

From Missouri to Singapore, Illinois alumni have made plans to hold parties to watch the Rose Bowl on Tuesday. And fans everywhere will be able to watch the official tailgate party at the Rose Bowl via the Internet.

The list of watch parties has grown to 21 locations in 14 states along with the Singapore party, according to Vanessa Faurie of the university’s alumni association.

The live webcast will be available from 1 to 3 p.m. St. Louis time. During that time, fans will be able to send text messages and photos from their parties, and they will be displayed on a Jumbotron at the tailgate party in Pasadena (after being screened, of course).

The official Illinois tailgate party will be held at the Brookside Golf Course near the stadium and will include Champaign band Captain Rat and the Blind Rivets.

The webcast will include four cameras with “man-on-the-street” interviews. To check for watch party locations and find out how to send messages or photos, visit www.uiaa.org.Of the 26,000 or so people who bought tickets from the Illinois allotment, about 2,500 traveled to Southern California in the official tour group. That’s a few more than took the tour to the Sugar Bowl in 2002, according to Kenneth Bruce of Dodds Athletic Tours in Champaign, but less than the 5,000 that went in 1984 to the Rose Bowl.

“It’s not our largest tour in history, but 2,500 is a great tour,” Bruce said. “We’re within the range of more than acceptable.”

Dodds organizes the official tour for schools in numerous bowls, including Ohio State and Missouri.

The Rose Bowl was a bit of a mess for the company this year. Ohio State had pre-sold about 2,000 spots on its tour when it was believed the Buckeyes would be in the game. Bruce had anticipated a group of about 3,000 Ohio State fans before the Buckeyes moved into the national championship game.
