Player in Leshoure incident will dress Saturday
The Illinois football player who was involved in the incident that resulted in Mikel Leshoure suffering a broken jaw will be in uniform for Saturday’s game against Western Michigan in Detroit, coach Ron Zook said this morning. He didn’t say if the player would see action.
Leshoure’s jaw was broken Saturday night, however, the school has provided no further details about how the injury occurred, except to say that another player was involved. The Champaign News-Gazette has reported that according to a source, the unnamed player was receiver Jeff Cumberland.
Zook was pressed on the matter this morning at his weekly press conference.
“Everybody wants to speculate and once again this is a family matter,” he said. “They have rights really. It’s a family issue and something that if we deemed he not be in uniform, he wouldn’t be.”
He went on to say:
“I try to treat these guys like they’re my own kids and how I’d want my own children to be dealt with. … I’m not going to apologize for the way we discipline our players. We have good kids. Do we have issues occasionally, absolutely. Every incident is different. If I had a son, I’d want him to play for our staff. They’ll get treated fairly and the way they need to get treated.”
