Illini players recruited by Locksley
It is now known that Mike Locksley is the choice as head coach at New Mexico, and an announcement is coming tomorrow in Albuquerque.
He was offensive coordinator for four years at Illinois and also worked as quarterbacks coach. But he had as much influence on the recruiting trail, where he had become known as one of the country’s best.
Here is a look at the players from Washington D.C. and Maryland who he helped bring to Illinois:
Travon Bellamy, safety: Tied for fourth on team with 53 tackles.
Will Davis, defensive end: Had 7 tackles for loss and 3 1/2 sacks as a senior after leading the team with 9 1/2 sacks as a junior.
Clay Nurse, defensive end: Will likely be part of rotation on the defensive line next season.
Rodney Pittman, linebacker: Tied for fourth on team with 53 tackles as a senior.
Ian Thomas, linebacker: Developing linebacker could be in mix as a sophomore.
Arrelious Benn, receiver: All-Big Ten receiver who is likely to leave for the NFL after his junior year.
Nate Bussey, safety: Contributed 21 tackles with two pass breakups as a sophomore.
Vontae Davis, cornerback: Three-year starter who is projected as a first-round NFL draft pick in 2009 if he decides to leave early.
Reggie Ellis, defensive lineman: Rated the No. 1 player in the D.C. area by Rivals.com coming out of high school.
Evan Frierson, linebacker: Among top 50 strongside linebackers as rated by Scout.com.
Eddie McGee, quarterback: The backup to Juice Williams was also used as a receiver late in 2008.
Ugochukwu Uzodinma, defensive lineman: Chose Illinois over Virginia after attending same high school as Davis, Benn and Bussey.
Tavon Wilson, cornerback: Played in all 12 games as a freshman, recording 11 tackles.
