Illinois confirmed this afternoon that guard Chester Frazier underwent minor surgery on his injured hand Thursday morning before the team traveled to Indianapolis for the Big Ten tournament.

Frazier will not play tonight and is unlikely to see action this weekend if the Illini advance. But spokesman Kent Brown said the surgery was done with the NCAA Tournament in mind.

“It gave him the best chance to play next weekend,” he said.

Although it is unlikely that Frazier would play Saturday or Sunday, Brown said the situation will be evaluated day to day if the Illini advance. Frazier suffered the injury in practice on Wednesday.

Because of confidentiality regulations, Brown would not give details on the injury or what was done during the surgery.
