Illinois receiver Arrelious Benn said he suffered a high ankle sprain against Missouri and his status for Saturday’s game against Illinois State will be determined Thursday. However, he said, “I plan to play.”

High ankle sprains generally involve a longer recovery time. But Benn said he had the same injury in high school and didn’t miss any games. This injury occurred while he was running a pass route.

“It got caught in the turf. A guy pushed me at the right time coming out of my break,” Benn said. “I tried to stand for the next play and couldn’t go. I’m not 100 percent. Yesterday I got out and ran a little, but I haven’t gone full speed in practice.”

Benn had his right ankle taped but was walking on his own power. However, he said he is suffering some pain when he walks. For a brief time after being injured, he was afraid he had broken his ankle but an X-ray proved negative.

The injury happened on the game’s third play after he made a short reception on the previous play. He watched the remainder of the game on TV from the Illinois locker room.

“That was real difficult to see the guys not cheering on the sideline,” he said. “They were getting down. It’s a game a lot of us are going to learn from.”

Since it appeared Saturday that without Benn in the lineup, our offense has zero direction, perhaps he should sit out another week and then play when Big Ten season begins instead of risking tweaking it worse and being out for the year. I am sure this won’t happen and he will probably break the ankle this Saturday, but at least I am giving my 2 cents worth.
