Due to a high level of pollen and poor air quality, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has consistently ranked St. Louis as one of the most challenging places to live if you have allergies. For those people with springtime allergies, enjoying the season outdoors may seem impossible, but according to Dr. Robert Onder of St. Louis’ Allergy and Asthma Consultants, it’s not.  Here are some helpful hints to enjoying the springtime with allergies:

  1. Time outdoor activities properly. Try to avoid outdoor activities in the early and mid-morning hours. Pollen counts tend to be higher in the morning.
  2. Wash out your nose. Keep some nasal saline around to rinse out your nasal passages two or three times a day when allergy symptoms are more active. Many people have discovered that sinus drainage and congestion is greatly reduced by once or twice daily nasal rinses with saline.
  3. Watch the weather. Heavy rains will wash away pollens, making for comfortable outdoor conditions.

Are you allergic to springtime pollens?

The survey– how about including, “Yes I take antihistamines and still suffer” Many of us get little, if any relief from OTC meds. Either Onder has a tiny practice, or is mistaken. I take prescription strength meds, and allergy shots and still suffer tremendously, and have for years. And while the rain washes away the pollen, it also gets the mold growing, so there’s little relief for those of us with severe allergies. This article implies, “Oh, just take a pill and all’s well” I wish.

I suffer greatly from allergies all through March-May and again during August-October and these tips will hopefully bring some relief. Thanks Dr. Onder!

Easy, Stillsane. I think the blog is just offering tips on to help out with allergies this spring. It didn’t say it would cure allergy symptoms. I don’t have allergies, but my brothers do. Our family would take all kinds of precautions to help aleviate the symptoms, but they still went to see an allergist. Hopefully one day there will be just a pill to take and all is better. In the meantime, small things like this can help out a bit.
