American Idol favorite Ruben Studdard will visit St. Louis Saturday to support awareness of sickle cell disease and the condition called “iron overload,” what happens when treatment of the disease causes too much iron to permeate a person’s body.
Studdard is helping the Sickle Cell Disease Community Advocates who will provide free screening during the event.
The details:
WHAT: The Sickle Cell Disease Community Advocates of St. Louis is hosting Be Sickle Smart, to educate residents with sickle cell disease about their risk for a serious but under-recognized condition called transfusional iron overload.
The event, including Studdard’s appearance includes free on-site iron overload screening tests. The test can detect “serum ferritin” which indicates a patient is at risk for iron overload. The condition is caused by having so many blood transfusions which are needed to battle the diease.
