Poll: Will you change your exercise habits?

A recent article in Time Magazine, “Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin,” has the fitness industry pulling out it’s collective hair.
The article says, in short, exercise all you want and you won’t lose weight until you eat less and eat better. What’s driving the industry crazy is the author, Time staff writer John Cloud, writes that exercise may actually contribute to weight gain. Why? Because after working out you feel free to eat more and because exercise may cause hunger.
The article concluded in part that exercise isn’t the issue. Moving around all day is the issue. An hour on a stairstep machine three times a week isn’t nearly as valuable as walking more, using the stairs, leaving your desk to take care of errands on foot rather by telephone and computer.

Do you plan to change your exercise habits, spend less time in the gym, more time moving in your regular life, and eating less?

It’s not only about the weight- I sleep better, look better, feel better & can actually carry 2- gallons of milk from the car to the house without feeling like I am going to pull the arms out of my sockets!

Sure you can lose weight without exercise, but you’re not going to like the results, especially if you lose LOTS of weight. You have to tone or you’ll just be thin and flabby.

The Time article is ridiculous. We all know that you have to eat sensibly as well as exercise in order to maintain a good weight. It’s not either, or. It’s both. Gotta go; this is my day for upper body at the gym.

Here’s a couple of liberal exercises:

flapping your gums over useless diatribes

handing out HUGE mounds of working people’s money to the undeserving

apologizing for the ills of subhumans that don’t want to contribute to society

Political partisans (lib exercises) are such wonderful idiots…
You know they are truly influencing others when they post off topic political drivel on EVERY single story, no matter what the subject is, it all has to have a political slant. Keep on climbing that mountain partisans, and a big hand to the post disgrace for their wonderful job moderating this site. Bravo! Bravo!

Losing weight is a simple concept just not simple to do. You have to burn more calories than you take in. People can do that by eating right, but what about being physically fit, having better quality of life, and being able PREVENT life threatening illnesses? Can eating less calories do that? I don’t think so.

You know martial arts is a great form of exercise for both your mind and body. While on vacation in Beijing a few years ago I visited a park where hundreds of seniors were gathered practicing Tai Chi, all were in fantastic shape doing this very low impact, non-violent (fighting moves), fluid form. Any able body person can do it. Martial arts of any form will change your life … for the better!

Moving around all day does make a big difference. I think working out is good, too, but I notice a huge difference in how I feel and look when I just make an effort to do the things you mention–walking more by parking at the far end of the lot, taking the stairs, getting up and walking around several times a day. It is very easy to sit around and do everything with a minimum of movement, but that kills your health.
