Gay and lesbian Missourians more likely to smoke
Everybody knows that smoking is a popular pastime in Missouri, but certain groups light up more than others.
About 36 percent of the state’s gay, lesbian and transgendered community smoke, compared to nearly 25 percent of the general population. And the gay community has less desire to stop — 37 percent say they’ll quit in the next six months, compared to 64 percent of all smokers in Missouri.
The stats come from a new survey from the nonprofit Missouri Foundation for Health. The foundation wanted to figure out who’s smoking, so prevention and cessation programs can be targeted at them.

Seriously!!! What does it matter your sexual preference?!?!?! You either smoke or don’t!!!! I’m sure the money spent on this study could have gone to better use!!!
WFT-I have to agree. WFT? I do not see what we are smoking included in the piece. I’ll be back after my smoke break to read more.
TLg5—TOO MUCH!
And this story gets published???
What a completely useless piece of information. I think part of my brain just shut down while I was skimming this nonsense…
Of course Gay people (especially Gay men) smoke more! Smoking allows you to inhale and exhale DRAMATICALLY! And besides, Gay people generally like to have more FUN than Straight people, and pay less attention to the Political Correctness Police.
I knew all smokers were gay!
This blurb of an article raised more questions for me than it answered. I am assuming the LGBT report (with hyperlink provided) was part of a larger study undertaken to get a clearer picture of the smoking habits of Missourians. While I didn’t read the 28-page report, I did peruse the information at http://www.mffh.org/tobaccostudy.htm but didn’t find what I thought would be more breakdowns on demographics. There was some info. in a 4-page executive summary about smoking rates in each county (the bootheel seems to have the highest concentration), smoking rates vs. income, etc., but nothing therein pertaining to LGBT smokers. I do think it is kind of an odd report, but I am guessing that this may have been funded by cigarette tax revenues, part of which I believe is supposed to be set aside for tobacco education and cessation programs.
do straight bars give out free cigarettes? because the gay ones do! so which came first-the cigarette or the gay?
do the tobacco companies know gays smoke more so they give out free stuff there? or do we smoke more because we get free smokes?
Probable Post-Dispatch future headline- “World Ends- Gays, Minorities, Women Hit Hardest.”
