Heart stents to be tried for Impotence

Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is often caused by blockage of the arteries. This is similar to the blocked arteries that occur when a male has a heart attack. Thus impotence could be considered to be “penile angina”. In the past, surgeons have tried to cure this by carrying out penile artery surgery. While a few surgeons have reported success, the majority have failed. Best results have been obtained in males under 30 years of age. Males who smoke have had particularly poor outcomes. One problem is that atherosclerosis effects not only the arteries but the penile drainage system. Thus improving arterial flow may allow the male to have a good erection, but fail to maintain it long enough for successful intercourse.

Now Medtronic has announced that they will conduct a trial of a drug eluting stent to cure impotence. These are similar to the stents used to treat persons with myocardial infarction (a heart attack). A catheter is inserted through the groin and then into the penile artery. The blockage is identified, cleaned out and the stent placed to prevent it from recurring. This is a logical approach to vascular impotence.  About 50 males will be included in the exploratory trial. If the results are better than surgery, this will be a boon to many males suffering from vascular impotence.

The use of Butea Superba compared to sildenafil for treating low libido & erectile dysfunction

To evaluate the effect of an extract of Butea superba (BS) compared to sildenafil for treating erectile dysfunction & Low Libido.
THE OBJECT OF THE TEST-
An open label study was carried out among 32 men with organic erectile dysfunction (ED) to evaluate the response on the International Index of Erectile Function 5(IIEF-5) to Butea Superba, a ‘natural health’ product (50mg), compared to 50 mg of sildenafil (a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor). After a 1-week wash-out, responders to Butea received either 100 mg starch or 100 mg of another batch of Butea (double-blind).
Of the patients in the Butea group, 27 (84%) responded positively, compared with 26 (81%) in the sildenafil group. When assessing the score alone, 12 (38%) had a better score after taking Butea, compared to seven (22%) after sildenafil, and eight (25%) had the same score. The results were surprising. A ‘natural’ health product containing Butea Superba was more effective than sildenafil in the study.

Seems like this would be a small group since they are only searching for those under 30 with vascular disease for the trials. I would be interested to know given the complications how many young men would try this? And would this be the group that has exhausted all other means?

Would the stents set off airport security alarms? I can imagine the ensuing scene.

cardiac, intracranial and penile stents do NOT trigger airport security alarms. but stay away from handheld security wands if you have a pacemaker. if required, elect a hand search instead

The study that Dr Douglas claims shows that Butea superba works went on to point out that this was only true in the first batch which was contaminated with a viagra like compound; the second batch had NO EFFECT. It would seem that this comment on “the flame of the forrest” is at best misguided. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT!

I am over 50 and have had ED for 5 plus years. I would be willing to be in the trial.
