Qualifying, expanding
So it will be Barbados facing the United States in Round 2 of World Cup qualifying after the Bajuns (if I remember correctly) knocked off Dominica 1-0, winning their series 2-1 on aggregate. They’ll be playing June 15 in Carson, Calif., then on June 20 or 21 in Bridgetown, Barbados.
There were a bunch of other CONCACAF qualifiers today, involving the region’s minnows. Assuming the Americans get past Barbados, it’s now known that their group will be made up of Guatemala or St. Lucia (which knocked off the dreaded Turks and Caicos Islands), Cuba or Antigua and Barbuda (which knocked off Aruba 4-0 on aggregate) and Trinidad and either Bermuda or the Cayman Islands. We won’t know that one until Sunday.
Netherlands Antilles knocked off Nicaragua. Not bad for the Antilles.
And the Americans knocked off Poland 3-0 in Krakow. The goals were by Bocanegra, Onyewu and Eddie Lewis.

On the previous item, a reader posted some ominous quotes from MLS Commissioner Don Garber on expansion, which made the St. Louis hopes sound, well, bleak. Jeff Cooper told me today he’s still very optimistic and that St. Louis is still on track for team No. 17. Cooper said ownership developments are a couple months away.
If the league is going to wait for Atlanta or New York to expand, it could be a long wait. Both of those cities are still pretty far away. But at almost every turn, it seems if there’s a choice between sooner or later when it comes to expansion here, later wins.

NY and Atlanta are not the issue. Montreal could be ready by next year and Portland would not be long after that. At some point, the City of Collinsville is going to say “We’ve had enough” and pul the plug.
