St. Louis Lions make U.S. Open Cup

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Not since the start of MLS changed the look of the tournament has a team from St. Louis taken part in the U.S. Open Cup, but Tony Glavin’s St. Louis Lions qualified over the weekend. The full draw hasn’t been held yet, but the Lions have been told they will start play against the Minnesota Thunder of USL-1 on June 10 in Blaine, Minn., (outside of Minneapolis) at 7 p.m. Who they might play in subsequent rounds — including what MLS team is in their part of the bracket — hasn’t been determined.

Congrats to the Lions and good luck against the Thunder. It would be amazing if the Lions were able to get a cup draw in St. Louis.

Looks like the Lions official site needs some updating … still lists the 2007 roster …

I listened to the game on the Internet last night, so my view is skewed by what the broadcasters said. They were saying that the Thunder looked to be in better shape than the Lions — the goals at the end of each half are indicative of that — but the Lions gave them a good game that was closer than the final score. It was a 2-1 game at the 79-minute mark and looked as if it would be a tight finish before Minnesota scored right away to put it away.
