Two in 2012 for MLS if …

From the official announcement from MLS about the Portland expansion:

Portland completes this round of expansion for MLS, which could expand to 20 teams by 2012 if two additional cities are deemed ready to join.

Does this mean if they had only one, they would wait until they had two? In any case, further expansion is possible, but not definite.

Loyal readers are no doubt aware that Portland doesn’t have a stadium deal yet, something that the league has held out as one of three requirements for a team (along with strong ownership and a strong soccer history). To that, MLS Commissioner Don Garber said:

“The Portland City Council’s recent approval of the framework for the renovations of PGE Park was a key factor in Portland becoming our 18th team,” Commissioner Garber added. “While I understand that there are some additional steps to formally conclude this process, we are confident that the package will be finalized in the next few months.”

What happens if the framework isn’t finalized? Unsure.

I’m expecting to talk to Garber later today. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks Tom; I’m looking forward to your update.

Once Garber has finished explaining to you that they want St. Louis in the league, that its “when not if”, that they will continue to work with Cooper to find (everybody now) deeper pockets, would you please ask him why soccer fans in St. Louis should believe him? Many of us have waited patiently, hearing these phrases time and again, only to watch MLS award franchises to investment groups that include billionaires.

Please ask him if he sees anything special in St. Louis, or whether it is just another major American city he wished a billionaire would help bring into the league.

Translation-I wanted Portland in so bad, I couldn’t wait for them to finish the stadium approval process to name them as our 18th team. I had to name them now.

In spite of my obvious bitterness, I do appreciate you staying on top of the story and keeping us informed.

After you talk to Garber, make sure you still have your wallet.

Another good question: after what’s happened to Collinsville and now Ottawa (who didn’t even get the courtesy of MLS waiting a few weeks for their stadium vote), why should any legislator take the risk of partnering with MLS?
