Chalupny, Solo get national team callup, will miss May 23 game

Athletica goalie Hope Solo and midfielder/defender Lori Chalupny were among 21 players called in by coach Pia Sundhage for the U.S. women’s national team’s games with Japan on May 20 and May 23. That means the two will miss Athletica’s game at Chicago on May 23. (It’s possible if Athletica signs a player from Japan in the meantime that that player could miss the game as well.) Chicago, meanwhile, will be without four players — defender Marian Dalmy, midfielders Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe and Lindsay Tarpley.

There aren’t any “discoveries” on the roster, players who have stood out in early WPS play who weren’t previously part of the national team pool. The closest is L.A.’s Brittany Bock, who is uncapped but has been in a national team camp before and Amy LePeilbet of Boston, who last played with the national team in 2006. Sundhage also brought in collegians Kelsey Davis (Portland), Christine Nairn (Penn State), Lauren Cheney (UCLA) and Casey Nogueira (North Carolina).

By the way, if you haven’t seen Daniela’s injury, you can find video of it on the WPS website among their highlights of the Athletica-Freedom game. It’s in the video category on the left side of the page under the main picture. The injury is at the 2:00 mark.

The full roster for the U.S. national team games with Japan:

GOALKEEPERS (3): Nicole Barnhart (FC Gold Pride), Kelsey Davis (Portland), Hope Solo (St. Louis Athletica)
DEFENDERS (7): Brittany Bock (Los Angeles Sol), Rachel Buehler (FC Gold Pride), Lori Chalupny (St. Louis Athletica), Marian Dalmy (Chicago Red Stars), Amy LePeilbet (Boston Breakers), Heather Mitts (Boston Breakers), Christie Rampone (Sky Blue FC)
MIDFIELDERS (7): Shannon Boxx (Los Angeles Sol), Angela Hucles (Boston Breakers), Carli Lloyd (Chicago Red Stars), Christine Nairn (Penn State), Heather O’Reilly (Sky Blue FC), Megan Rapinoe (Chicago Red Stars), Lindsay Tarpley (Chicago Red Stars)
FORWARDS (4): Lauren Cheney (UCLA), Casey Nogueira (North Carolina), Amy Rodriguez (Boston Breakers), Abby Wambach (Washington Freedom)

Wow, really going with some youngsters on this squad. Especialy at forward with Cheney, Nogueira, and Rodriguez. Also Nairn. Mostly experienced backline players though, except Bock and Dalmy.

I sure hope we have Cinalli and Larsson back for the Chicago game or we won’t even have enough players for a traveling squad.

Wish there was a way to avoid these National team conflicts with the WPS. Could not have been a good thing for Athletica to have the LA team come to town without Marta.

Rapinoe was not on the USWNT. I saw the Olympics last year on NBC and Rapinoe was not playing. So she is new addition to the USWNT and deservedly so.

Bad idea to have USWNT games conflict with WPS games. WPS should’ve learned that from MLS and scheduled the games accordingly.

It might (I’m not even sure about that) be logistically possible for MLS to take international dates off in years without major tournaments although those logistics create a whole new set of headaches for the league and the fans.

For WPS, I doubt it is even logistically possible to take the international dates off.

Rapinoe has eight caps and has scored three goals for the WNT. She made her debut with the team in 2006, then tore an ACL and was out for the season. Then she tore the ACL again. She was on the team that went to the Algarve Cup this spring, prior to the start of the WPS season.

I happy for Chalupny and Solo. However with the Athletica they have not played up to par. Solo forgot how to play goal the other night and Chalupny has been too worried about what she hears in the newspaper.

More goals from Lori, fewer from Hope. C’mon Athletica. Show us whatcha got.

It is going to be interesting to see the outcome of these games without most of the WNT players available due to national team games. The coaches will have to be creative and I am excited to see that.

MLS-First of all, how can you hear what’s in the newspaper? Besides, Lori has played great thus far, and there are only 2 things that I can criticize her for. One being that her PK went pretty much straight at the goalie, but sometimes people mishit the ball, it happens. The second is that she could shoot a little more, and she has a beautiful shot. She shouldn’t pass up good shot opprotunities like she does, but she does that for the national team anyways. As for Hope, that first goal she was a little late diving, but I have to give her credit for hitting her head off the goalpost and getting right back up. Many people would need a minute or two to collect themselves after something like that. But that couldn’t be as bad as getting her arm caught on the hook of the goalpost. The second goal, well that was all Hope, not sure what happened there. My guess is the ball probably slipped right off of her as she is diving and it just gets by her because it was so wet. The third one Hope had no chance at. The defender should have let the ball through instead of jumping and putting her head back to try and stop it. She is not Abby’s height, that will not work. It was a well placed header from Bompastor and it was a great goal from a bad Athletica play.

I’d like to see more of the Athletica. Any word on being able to view at least a few games online or another TV deal? Some cities have deals to show 2 games on TV locally so what’s the holdup here? Whether it be Channel 11 or Charter local access something can be done.
