Commissioner’s ruling on Wambach-Daniela due today

The league’s disciplinary committee didn’t have a problem with the injury-causing tackle, but the commissioner has reserved the right to review the play and assess a penalty, which is due by the close of business today. Since the league is based in San Francisco, it could be 7 p.m. St. Louis time before we hear.

Here’s the statement from the league:

“The League Disciplinary Committee has completed its review of a number of on-field incidents in the May 3, 2009, game between the Washington Freedom and Saint Louis Athletica. In the Committee’s collective opinion, none of them met the very specific criteria for over-ruling the decisions of the game referee, and therefore further disciplinary measures were not imposed.

However, the Commissioner may independently exercise her discretion to further review the match and assess penalties based upon conduct that is detrimental to the best interests of WPS, the integrity of its matches and the protection of its Players. The Commissioner has elected to and is in the process of reviewing the circumstances of the Freedom-Athletica match, and it is expected that she will announce the results of her review by the end of business on Thursday, May 7th. If, based on her review, the Commissioner determines that penalties are appropriate, such penalties may include fines, youth sports-oriented community service, or suspensions.”

My take has been the foul was stupid more than anything. Taking a ball from a player in the penalty box is one thing. Taking it in the center circle quite another. So that’s a play you really have no business making. Which I suppose constitutes reckless play, which I suppose constitutes a dangerous play. This is one of those plays where the league doesn’t have a precedent. Stupid foul results in one of league’s best players being out with an injury for the season. (Complicating matters is the foul was done by another of the league’s best players.) My prediction: I see community service in Abby Wambach’s future but no games lost.

Unfortunately, you will probably be right about the penalty for Wambach. But what does this say to the players? There were a lot of reckless plays in that game, but the Wambach play was one of the few that was at a players knees or ankles, where a serious injury can occur.

After watching Chalupny, and to a lesser degree Karen Carney, get beat up in the opener and after watching the Athletica/Freedom game in person, I am worried that more injuries will happen if the league doesn’t put there foot down. I didn’t even see the Boston game which also reportedly had some chippy play. Doing nothing, which is basically what the league is doing in this case, won’t accomplish anything to fix that.
