Nowak steps down as U.S. assistant, will take Philly job
Peter Nowak, who was the top assistant on the U.S. national team, has stepped down from that post and will be named head coach of the expansion Philadelphia team in the near future. The U.S. has two World Cup qualifying matches next week, on the road against Costa Rica and then on June 6 in Chicago against Honduras, and since it will take a while to get someone new on board, St. Louis’ Mike Sorber will be the top assistant, at least for a while. And immediately after the game in Chicago, the team will leave for the Confederations Cup in South Africa. A new assistant might not be in place until the fall.
Nowak won the MLS Cup as a player with Chicago (where he played under U.S. coach Bob Bradley) and as the head coach of D.C. United.
