KPLR to air two Athletica games

In what may the only over-the-air broadcasts of WPS games, Channel 11 will air the July 18 game at Washington and the Aug. 1 game vs. Boston. No word yet on who will be handling the play by play and commentary (though a betting man would have to consider Bill McDermott a leading candidate) though Rich Gould will be doing a half-hour pregame show on both games.

Washington and Boston have some of their games air on cable and the league has a weekly package on Fox Soccer Channel.

While I’m very glad that we are airing games, I have to wonder about the wisdom of airing a home game. How bad will this hurt our live gate when people can sit at home in the air conditioning and enjoy the match from home. If it were up to me (which obviously it isn’t) I would rather have our game at Bay Area to close out the regular season aired, since FSC has decided that they would rather air yet another LA match. I’m just sayin…

It has to be less expensive to broadcast a home game than it does a road game. Also, it might hurt the home gate a little that night, but by being on TV it will introduce many, many more fans to the team. I believe it is always better for those viewing a home town team for the first time to be able to see the excitement of the team being rooted on by their home fans. It adds nothing to the initial viewing experience for the crowd to go silent when your team scores.

True, the costs will be lower. I guess I’m just wishing we could have started doing this earlier in the season.

I’m with you Tom, it’s gotta be for budgetary reasons they’re airing a home game. I think it’s a great idea and I hope they get a good share of the viewership. I for one will be watching. Go Athletica!

I’m looking forward to watching them play. Like to see more of their games on television.

Great news. I’ve been a women’s soccer fan ever since the 99 Women’s World Cup and all the Hope Solo drama of the last WC was great too as well as the Olympics. It would be better if they showed road games but we’ll take what we can get.

Maybe once the Athletica build more of a following they can show 3 or 4 games next year. Props to Channel 11 for doing this and I’ll call them and let them know.
