Chalupny, Solo called in to U.S. camp; Rampone is pregnant
U.S. coach Pia Sundhage is calling in 26 players for a 12-day training camp in Carson, Calif., starting on Sept. 21. It’s the first post WPS camp, and she’ll be looking at players to take to Germany for a match on Oct. 29.
Eighteen players from the team’s matches with Canada in July are on the roster, with Lori Chalupny and Hope Solo being called in from the Athletica. But this is the first camp that really reflects the new WPS world.
Among those called in based on their WPS play are Brittany Bock of Los Angeles — she’s been with the team before but is uncapped – FC Gold Pride midfielder Tina DiMartino (5 caps/1 goal), Washington midfielder Lori Lindsey (1/0), and Sky Blue FC midfielder Yael Averbuch (2/0). Other uncapped players are Chicago midfielder Brittany Klein and Sky Blue FC defender Meghan Schnur. Those last five have all been on U.S. youth teams. Sky Blue FC midfielder Kacey White (17/0) hasn’t been with the team since the Algarve Cup in March.
Three of the players called in are in college: UCLA forward Lauren Cheney, North Carolina midfielder Tobin Heath and North Carolina goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris. (In case you missed it, North Carolina routed UCLA, I think it was 7-0, the other night.) Harris may be the U.S. team’s goalie of the future. She started for the U.S. in the ‘02 and ‘04 U-19 championships. She was 16 for the ‘02 tournament and has two ACL surgeries in the meantime.
Not with the team will be Lindsay Tarpley, who has a torn ACL, and Sky Blue player/coach Christie Rampone, who it turns out was almost three months pregnant when her team won the WPS title last week. Her child is due in late March. The last time she had a baby, she played her first match 112 days later. By that schedule, she would be back late next season.
“It’s been an eventful year to say the least, but the timing of this pregnancy is perfect because I was able to finish off this amazing first season and hopefully get back in time to make a major contribution to Sky Blue in 2010,” Rampone told U.S. Soccer. “I am going to miss being with the national team this fall, but I know the leadership is in good hands with Lori Chalupny and the other veterans. I’m looking forward to watching how much the national team grows over the next few months heading into the next WPS season and I am going to work hard to get myself back into shape to be available for the run to the Women’s World Cup.”
Indeed, for the time being, Chalupny and Cat Whitehill are the veterans on defense.
Here’s the full roster:
GOALKEEPERS (3): Nicole Barnhart (FC Gold Pride), Ashlyn Harris (North Carolina), Hope Solo (St. Louis Athletica);
DEFENDERS (8): Brittany Bock (Los Angeles Sol), Rachel Buehler (FC Gold Pride), Lori Chalupny (St. Louis Athletica), Stephanie Cox (Los Angeles Sol), Amy LePeilbet (Boston Breakers), Heather Mitts (Boston Breakers), Megan Schnur (Sky Blue FC), Cat Whitehill (Washington Freedom)
MIDFIELDERS (12): Yael Averbuch (Sky Blue FC), Shannon Boxx (Los Angeles Sol), Tina DiMartino (FC Gold Pride), Tobin Heath (UNC), Angela Hucles (Boston Breakers), Brittany Klein (Chicago Red Stars), Lori Lindsey (Washington Freedom), Carli Lloyd (Chicago Red Stars), Heather O’Reilly (Sky Blue FC), Leslie Osborne (FC Gold Pride), Megan Rapinoe (Chicago Red Stars), Kacey White (Sky Blue FC)
FORWARDS (3): Lauren Cheney (UCLA), Amy Rodriguez (Boston Breakers), Abby Wambach (Washington Freedom)

Obviously, Pia wasn’t all that impressed with Athletica players. I thought Ellertson and Fletcher might get another look.
That UNC/UCLA scoreline was actually 7-2, UCLA’s Sydney Leroux (the MVP of the U-20 World Championships last year in Chile) scored twice.
I must I’m a little suprised to see Rodriguez still in there after her league campaign. I assume that Pia believes that some of the blame belongs to Ol Tony as well
KC — Just based on the roster, it looks like a youth movement in the back. LePeilbet is 27, but the others: Schnur, 24, Cox, 23, Buehler, 24 (today’s her birthday!), Bock 22. Mitts is 31, Whitehill 27 and Chalupny 25. Tina is 27, by the way.
bek — Thanks. Sorry to have shortchanged the old alma mater.
J Stats — I asked Pia about Rodriguez’s struggles the last time I talked to her and she thinks there was a lot of pressure put on her in Boston that isn’t put on her with the national team, where she’s one among many rather than THE FIRST PICK IN THE DRAFT! She said she wouldn’t be surprised at all to see her have a better season next year. Still, her struggles this season were surprising. It’s one thing to have Kerri Hanks struggle, but to have some with the international experience of Rodriguez have trouble.
Any idea why Shannon Boxx was left off the roster??
Wow. Totally ignore that. I’m sorry I missed her name on the list.
