Now that I’ve got that out of my system, the folks at Trailnet have something for you to do on Saturday, May 10. It’s called the Lewis & Clark “Departure Days” Bicycle Ride. The Bicycle Fun Club will be pedaling a portion of the path taken by Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery on Saturday, May 10. Registration for the bicycle ride is 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. at the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site, One Lewis & Clark Trail, Hartford, IL 62048.
Cyclists can choose route lengths of 18, 35 or 50 miles. The routes are on roads and portions of the Madison County Transit (MCT) trails. After the ride return to the Departure Days Celebration that includes re-enactors portraying expedition members and period artisans demonstrate their crafts. The terrain for all routes is mostly flat to rolling.
The ride fee is $8 for Trailnet members, $12 for non-members, and children under 13 are $3 with an adult. Services provided include SAG (service and gear) support until 3 p.m., route markings and map. This ride is produced in partnership with The Confluence and the Lewis and Clark Society of America.
Directions to the start: Exit I-270 at IL-3 and go north on IL-3. At New Poag Road (first stoplight) turn left into the Museum and follow the signs to bike parking.
