Megabus.com has a new mobile alert system that lets customers know about delays with an automated voice message.

Customers can sign up for the mobile alert system while booking a trip. Currently only five percent of Megabus.com arrivals and departures are delayed.

I’m still getting calls about Megabus.com, mostly because the column written last May neglected to include a phone number. That’s because Megabus is an online service that provides city-to-city bus rides.

Still, if you need to call, the number is 1-877-462-6342.

I rode a Mebagus to and from Kansas City. Ten hours on a bus is not really my idea of the perfect day, but it was a pleasant experience. I was in a new double-decker bus that was largely empty. I had the front row seat on top for a nice view of the countryside.

With gas prices still outrageous, Megabus offers the cheapest alternative to your car. If you can book weeks in advance, you can get real deals. Yep, some as low as a buck for a trip to Chicago.

The service goes only to large cities in the Midwest, it does not stop at every little burg along the way. That’s why they call it express.

Try it, you’ll like it.

I rode Megabus for the first time a few weeks ago, and it was a very positive experience. The double-decker buses are really awesome. The only drawback is that it was raining, and the buses pick people up on street corners, and it was raining in Chicago where I transferred to another bus. Small price to pay for a dramatically cheaper ticket than Greyhound and a much more comfortable ride.

Megabus is a really good deal. Generally it’s been wonderful at helping our daughter in college save money as she travels home. However, some warnings do apply. When you travel in winter the reliability of on time departure can go down (understandable). Late departures due to Megabus not scheduling a driver for the Chicago to STL route is not!!! Also, when dropped off in Chicago it’s not a good idea anymore to wait inside Union Station for your next bus. The security doesn’t like Megabus cutomers too much. Lastly, if you have to call Megabus with a comment or inquirery it can be challanging. We had to do it once in December during a Chicago blizzard and it was very frustrating. Our daughter finally made it home, but not after a lot of anxiety over whether she could make it much longer standing out in the cold snow waiting for a bus that didn’t have a driver assigned.

I have used the Mega bus several times for trips to and from Chicago. It is the only way to go. The price is right and the bus is comfortable and gets there just as fast as a car. It beats trying to find a parking place in that beautiful City!

…and don’t forget the free wi-fi, even on the one-level buses.
