Flying out of Lambert for Thanksgiving? Here’s a baggage fee primer for you

Make some room on your credit card. If you’re heading out of town for Thanksgiving, here is a list of the baggage charges for the major carriers at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport for domestic flights.
THIS IS A TRAVEL TIP: Save time and put the fee on your credit card. If the airline folks have to write out a receipt for your luggage, it can take forever. Trust me, it happened to me last week. Just swipe your card through the automatic check-in and be done with it. It’s quicker.
- AirTran: First bag free, second is $10 via online check-in or $20 at the airport.
- American: $15 for the first checked piece, second bag is $25, and $100 for each additional piece.
- Air Canada: First two bags free, $100 for additional pieces.
- Continental: One free, second is free to elite and full-coach passengers, $25 otherwise. Three free for first class. Every bag over three for regular passengers is $150.
- Delta: $15 first bag, $25 for second, $80 for other bags up to five.
- Frontier: One free, $25 for second, $50 per extra piece.
- Great Lakes: Two free checked bags.
- Midwest: One free, $20 for second, $100 for each additional.
- Northwest: $15 for first bag, $25 for second, $100 for each extra bag.
- Southwest: Two free, third bag is $25, additional bags are $50 each.
- United: $15 for first bag, $25 for second, $125 for third through sixth bag.
- US Airways: $15 for first bag, $25 for second, $100 for additional bags.

It looks like Southwest has the lowest checked bag fee overall of the major carriers. They also seem to have the overall lowest rates of major carriers as well. I try to fly Southwest whenever I have to as I like the airline.
Hi Dan -
You are correct! I flew American last week, and I’m looking to fly Southwest in February to Florida. Gotta love all of those nonstop, direct flights.
Thanks for blogging.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Drat….flying in January on American…forgot about the “fees” for my luggage so I’m not forced to wear dirty underwear for a week. A serious rip-off. How many people do NOT fly with at least one checked bag?!?!
