Seven in 10 travelers are female. Half are single or travel without their spouse.
Overseas Adventure Travel, a leader in international adventure travel for Americans over 50, says there has been a significant increase in the number of female travelers over the past five years.
Today, seven in 10 OAT travelers are female, up from five in 10 in 2003. An estimated 50 percent of these women are single or travel without their spouses, up from one-third in 2003.
To encourage female travelers, OAT is offering free single supplments and launching a new line of women’s only departures for this year.
More than 40,000 women traveled with OAT in 2008, up from 13,500 in 2003. About 47,000 women are projected to travel with OAT in 2009, including 26,000 who will travel alone, with a female friend and/or without their spouses. The average age of the female traveler is 66.
Free single supplments are for travel booked by Feb. 16, and based on availability.

White males would travel more by themselves if we were allowed to but the paranoia that the media has whipped society in to now prevents it. They have the female population firmly believing that it’s not the black male that’s to be feared but the “white male”. Despite actual crime statistics, just watch any TeeVee cop show and now EVERY perp is a white and the savvy, not to be fooled, cops are all blacks or latinos and they get that filthy “white male perv/rapist/murderer/child molestor” every time. Why the hell should white males try to enjoy themselves. If we’re out somewhere by ourselves we’re harassed that we’re out to commit a crime while our black counterpart if fawned over and provided every opportunity to commit one. And if two white males dare go out to a grab a bite to eat, we’re asked “Would you like to sit across from each other or next to one another?” — WTF? “How would you like a f* black eye?” is what you find yourself wanting to ask!
Wow…Social Injustice…that’s one hell of a white persecution rant you have going on there. You managed to turn this quick blurb about female travelers into a gay bashing, misogynistic and paranoid manifesto of hatred.

As a soon-to-turn-50 divorced woman I have to tell you, the article is spot on.
My sister - also 50-something and divorced - has travelled extensively for both business and pleasure during 2008 and did it all alone. Loved it.
Me? I’ve booked a trip in March and am looking at a cruise in the fall…. alone and loving it.
Of course, if I run into “Social Injustice”, well, let’s just say it’s guys like him making so many of us women want to go it alone these days. Where the heck did you all dredge him up from and when are you sending him back??
