The best of the Midwest’s independent bookstores
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Visiting a good bookstore is a great way to connect with local vibe and culture.
Midwest Living magazine’s February issue lists five independent bookstores around the region with cozy corners, author events and good selections.
They are
- Prairie Lights in Iowa City, Iowa
- Town House Books in St. Charles, Ill.
- Harry W. Schwartz Bookshop in Milwaukee
- Common Good Books in St. Paul, Minn.
- Watermark Books and Cafe in Wichita, Kan.
I have not a clue as to why our own indy bookstore Left Bank Books was left off this list. The longtime bookstore (yes, since 1969) in the Central West End only last month opened a second location downtown at 10th and Locust.

Jackie Hutcherson is editor of STL Health, the Post-Dispatch's Thursday section dedicated to medical and health news.
Not only is Left Bank Books excellent, but so is Subterranean Books in the Loop.
