Author Ann Hazelwood has compiled a list of “100 Unique Eats and Eateries in Missouri” in a new book published by Reedy Press. (It’s available at www.reedypress.com.)

Balanced geographically, the books covers all corners of the state and can be used as a culinary guide for travelers.

Some of her choices are obvious: the baby burgers at Booches Billiard Hall in Columbia, the bacon-wrapped shrimp appetizer at the Candlestick Inn in Branson, any of the pies at the Blue Owl Restaurant in Kimmswick.

Some others were surprises. The Caveman Barbeque and Steak House in Richland was news to me, and the “throwed rolls” at Lambert”s Cafe in Sikeston certainly are unique, but wouldn’t be my idea of a “savory establishment.”

We know about the frozen custard at Ted Drewes, the toasted ravioli at Charlie Gitto’s and the hamburgers at Blueberry Hill.

What are your favorite food stops, off the beaten path, outside the St. Louis area? Please add your comments below.

Andy’s frozen custard in Springfield, MO beats Ted Drewes by a mile, I’m afraid; AND they have the Pretzel Caramel Crunch.

For one of the best Steaks with an unbelievable secret seasoning/rub on it, try Frisco’s in Cuba, MO. Old renovated Frisco Rail Depot. Fantastic food.

I think Lambert’s is a great add. They have amazing southern style food, even if the atmosphere is a bit lacking. Funny, they are famous for their rolls, but it is their comfort food like meatloaf and fried okra that will really knock your socks off.

Unfortunately, I gave up red meat, so I am not able to partake in any of the fun!

Kay’s in Lake Ozark, Mo. By far the greatest all you can eat breakfast on earth, all for under $9. Never a wait shorter than a hour, but WELL worth it!!

The Rustic Oak at Mark Twain Lake has great home style cooking and a nice atomosphere! Just off Hwy J up from Ray Behrens.
