Finally, St. Louis has made a national list for a good thing. A survey released by Travel + Leisure ranks St. Louis third among the nation’s affordable cities.

For its annual “favorite cities” online survey, the magazine’s respondents rated 30 popular cities in more than 55 categories. Here are some of the highlights:

Miami was said to have the most attractive people. Nashville was rated the friendliest town. The most intelligent folks are in Minneapolis/St. Paul, and the most stylish in New York.

The best museums and galleries were in Washington D.C., as were the best historical sites and monuments. New York had the top restaurants, and Houston the best airports.

Minneapolis/St. Paul, where all those smart people live, also was voted the cleanest city, and Portland, Ore., the most environmentally friendly. Houston had the best affordable hotels, and Charleston the best B&Bs and inns. The best stylish boutique hotels were in New Orleans, and the best resorts in Orlando.

New Orleans scored again as the best singles bar scene, the best live music and the best people watching.

In the affordable getaways category, Cleveland was first, Kansas City second and St. Louis third.

Here’s the bad news. St. Louis finished dead last of the 30 cities in two categories: Most stylish people and best shopping.

But, how can you be stylish if the shopping is lousy?

Not surprised about being last for stylish: Go to the zoo on the weekend for example and you wonder if the animals are inside or outside the cage!!! Pretty scary. I have never seen that in my entire life….

I love Saint Louis, but it’s true: people here dress like absolute slobs.

The StL uniform:

warm weather: jeans, t shirt
cool weather: jeans, sweatshirt

Pathetic.

There is no style in this town. Oh look a guy in an Aero shirt and pre-faded jeans with flip-flops on!!

Cheapy, cheap place to live though.

When we moved here from California in 1979, the emphasis on values other than “style” was what I liked best about St. Louis. In the beach town where we lived last in California, our son was persecuted by the other kids for not wearing OP clothing. Nothing like that happened here. In California, you often didn’t know your next door neighbors. Here, every time we have moved, our neighbors have come by and introduced themselves. There are other things about St. Louis that need improvement and people who have seen my posts know that I’m not shy about being curmudgeonly about them, but lack of style is not one of them.

Spending a lot on clothing outside of it’s use for your career is a massive waste of cash. No wonder this country is in the hole it’s in when designer clothes for the supermarket is a priority.

Does shopping matter any more? I keep hearing that consumers are holding on tight to their wallets.
I don’t dress stylish but I do dress “nice” especially for work. Generally hit Dillards, Macy’s and sometimes Kohls but do so when they have decent sales. I will never forget when Nordstroms first opened her my SO and I went I walked into the men’s department and picked up a dress shirt, saw the price of $150 said holy cr@p to the clerk who walked up, threw the shirt down, walked out and have never been back. Don’t know if Nortstrom is “style” or not but if it is you can keep it.

What do they mean “there isn’t any good shopping or style in St. Louis….Just today I just bought a nice pair of Dockers at Macy’s.

I just picked up a couple of IOU sweatshirts and some Used jeans for a minimal price. Who says St. Louis is out of style??

I love going to the Whole Foods in Brentwood and seeing all of the North Face jackets. Yuppie hippies with $200 crappy fleece jackets..hilarious. And North Face..uh, 2001 called, it wants it’s crappy fleece jackets back.

Like so many of these stupid lists you can’t compare St. Louis to almost all other cities. If we had city limits like any other city the areas like Clayton and malls like the Galleria and the loop would be included in the ‘city.’ West County and Chesterfield malls would be included in the city if had the city limits of some of the cities we are being compared to. Once again the stupid division of our city/county continues to shine us in a negative light.
