Say good-bye to Christian Backman

The Blues shipped him to the Rangers for a fourth-round pick. That is not much of a return, but the once-promising defenseman didn’t play well for Andy Murray.

Period.

Also, he made $2.2 million per year. Since the Blues just signed Barret Jackman to a $14.4 million deal, John Davidson was looking to realign the team’s finances. With offensive defenseman Steve Wagner, steady Jeff Woywitka and hard-hitting Roman Polak ready to push for jobs next season, Backman’s exit made sense.

Addition by subtraction, thank God for Sather. Too bad JD couldn’t improve the team, hopefully July will produce an asset or two. Puzzled that Salvador couldn’t bring some kind of return !!!!!

Um, hoorah. Maybe Steve Wagner, steady Jeff Woywitka and hard-hitting Roman Polak won’t bounce off the wall in the corners when checked and lose the puck to a now open and time blessed winger dishing a puck off to an unattended rushing forward in front of the net to crush the Blues hopes of a comeback in countless games. 4th round pick though. Couldn’t they have thrown in a skate sharpener and a used puckbag?
Good to see we got a good return on Salvador. Perhaps the new kid and DJ can bounce each other around in the corners. The last thing we needed was another scoring forwad!!! Hope the Ellars and Oshies of the world are all we think they are going to be. Have a great golf season Blues. Going to watch the Habs and their rookie goalies try to win a playoff game…

I watched that 4th round pick play this year he’s a easily knocked off the puck turnover sissy just like Backman. Oh wait….they haven’t drafted him yet and its not a first round pick……wheeeew!

Hopefully losing some of Backman’s contract will give JD some incentive to pick up an offensive forward in the offseason.

And I guess Salvador lost the UFA coin toss to Jackman. Kind of a shame, best of luck to him. I hope Jackman can earn his contract, since we already have another high-priced/under-achieving defensive veteran.

Amen Jimmy I agree. Kariya sure isn’t lighting the lamp like he should. If Backman is worth $3+million a year than I am the pope, which I’m not. Therefore, let me suit up for 1/4 of Backman’s pay, my old hockey body would do just as well.

I THINK THEN BLUES ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING,. SALVADOR WAS NOT SIGNED AND THEY GOT A YOUNG HUNGRY PLAYER IN RETURN. BACKMAN HAS UNDERACHIEVED JUST WISH WE COULD HAVE GOTTEN MORE FOR HIM. OTHER PLAYERAS HAVE UNDERACHIEVED SO THAT IS WHY WE ARE WHERE WE ARE AT. MAYBE A PLAYER WITH SOME GRIT IS WHAT WE NEED TO WAKE SOME OF THESE PLAYERS UP TO PLAY TO THEIR POTENTIAL. GO BLUES!!!!!!

Okay a quick armchair analysis…

So, Jax takes it to the wire asking for 3.5M minimum and gets 3.6M and 4 years? Apples to apples he and McKee are nearly stamped from the same mold (minus Jax fists) and fans are shouting he’s overpaid-I pray there’s a bigger picture this summer because Jax pre-lockout was better that Jax post-lockout and he was cheaper! Sal goes to a contender for a goon (no offense Cam I want you to beat everyone up even looks at our boys funny) who hasn’t played a second on NHL ice this season? Didn’t he play a lot of minutes for the team along side a guy who’s now our Captain and that’s all he can pull? Backman goes to NYR for a fourth round pick-a guy who’s drafted 24th overall, helps the Swedes to gold and can’t even garner a warm body to put on the roster even with the Aces? Why didn’t he take Marty with him for a skate sharpener and a few rolls of tape-jeez? Was JD out sick today and Larry manning the phones? What just happened???

We let go of guys like Demitra to keep Salvador and Backman. Well…we could use a finisher now. I guess nothing is available that we could afford. Our chances of making it to the playoffs are, let’s say, 10% less than before the tradez. That is, we are 5% candidates to get in the last wagon of that train.

35 years of watching the Blues make trades (including Caron’s “deal” for Garth Butcher) and I can’t believe what I’m seeing. We gave away two able bodies for a potential gimp and a potential 4th rounder! Couldn’t Davidson found a decent backup for Manny? LA gave Aubin to the Ducks for a 7th round pick!! Argh!
