Ho-hum Day One for Blues
The Blues made their big moves long before the NHL Draft started, trading Jamal Mayers for a third-round pick and spending a fourth-rounder to get goaltender Chris Mason from Nashville. Those were minor moves, although Mason does fill a big roster void.
The Note rejected offers from teams attempting to move up to the fourth overall pick. Instead, the Blues took offensive defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, a pick that drew raves from the analysts.
“I love this selection for St. Louis,” TSN’s Pierre McGuire said. “This is a phenomenal-looking young team, especially on defense.”
John Davidson was also unable to parlay his two high second-round picks into an additional first-round pick, so his braintrust had to sit back and watch the rest of the round unfold.
Also, the Blues stayed out of the fray as potential top-line forwards Alex Tanguay, Olli Jokinen and Mike Cammalleri changed teams.
So what will Day Two bring?
The Blues will continue to dangle defenseman Jay McKee, although off-loading the last $8 million of that contract will be tricky. They will have get an opportunity to add long-range prospects up front and in goal.
San Jose is looking to move center Patrick Marleau, which is something the Blues should at least take a peek at. Also, rumors persist that Ottawa could move center Jason Spezza — although the Ottawa Sun reports that team management is shooting down that speculation with vigor.
Again, that is a situation Davidson would have to keep an eye on. No. 1 centers are hard to find.
